Re: Christmas Dinner
We have the family coming this Christmas but if I'de seen what Carol has planned we'de have gone to hers instead
Christmas is surely all about having too much although we rarely have turkey, last year we had Tornados Rossini with all the eXXes for the ' Main ' and very nice it was too even if I do say so myself.

Re: Christmas Dinner
I don't doubt there is a shopping centre in Essex (probably a clone of the sundry other ones dotted around the country) that some marketing person has named "The Lakeside Shopping Centre" in order to make it sound attractive, but it can't hold a candle to the real Lakeside.HK phooey wrote:Notso, Lakeside is a shopping centre in Essex.
That boasts a hotel & restaurant, the Windermere steamers (though they are diesel powered these days), a railway station ( where the trains are mostly steam powered, the Aquarium of the Lakes (think of a Sealife Centre - but with freshwater creatures) lots of fresh air and magnificent scenery, and except for peak holiday periods, the biggest difference of all: PEACE AND QUIET

No, that is just the one that gets most 'hits' from internet search engines, - mostly from fashion obsessed youngsters looking for the latest 'must have' items, who have yet to discover the finer things in life.
The 'real' one is the original one. A shopping centre is just that -a shopping centre: - regardless of the name the marketing people give to it.
....and I'm told the Lakeside Hotel does a really good Christmas package. (just to get back on topic)

Notso, please stick to the topic which is Christmas dinner.
Now, Carole F, is there any chance you can pick us up or we can stay over and drive back the next day. We both like a good drink on Christmas day

Very nice it is too. It's motto - 'overlooking nothing but the lake'.
We are doing meals on wheels.
As my mother gave up cooking years ago we buy all the ingredients and then cart all the food, the cooking and cutting utensils down to Leicester and hope we haven't forgotten anything. Mother is 89 and recently had some teeth extracted so whatever we cook will have to be tender as she only has 3 teeth at the top!!! It's going to be the traditional dinner though with all the trimmings shared with her next door neighbour who is 84. By afternoon the place will be rocking............... to the rasp of snoring!!!
By the time we have dinner, presents and our clothes in the car we are packed out. Mother will greet us with the usual 'You've brought a lot haven't you?'
After Christmas we are going to London for a rest!!

Naming your Turkey. Now I've heard it all.Admiral of the Humber wrote:Traditional for us.
For years we alternated between Christmas dinner at my parents one year then the in laws the next. Then three years ago we decided to do our own just for the three of us and loved it. At the risk of sounding a little like Degsey arrangements are well on the way with a fine selection of drinks already laid down for the grand event. We just have to decide on a name for the turkey, 2011 was Tina, 2012 was Trevor...2013...Tracey perhaps?!!

Rob aka AOTH
It normally only gets a name if it turns out to be tough. And you don't want to know what I call it then

To be honest, we were disappointed with our Christmas dinner on Aurora last year. Lukewarm and uninspiring.

Re: Christmas Dinner
HK - I think you mis-read my post - that is what I have done in the past, not what I intend doing this year! To me Pigs in Blankets means sausages wrapped in flattened white bread - on Christmas Day! I'm afraid our accommodation is somewhat limited but I suppose you could go and sleep in the workshop! Foxy will know what I mean.
One year I did a rib of beef instead of turkey but that is fraught with difficulties - some people want it rare, some medium and some well-done - went off that idea. Then there was the Christmas that the oven broke down. Luckily our neighbours were away and I was able to use their oven, but just imagine, back and forwards with meat dishes, roast potatoes etc. A nightmare.
Going back around 34 years, our first Christmas after our marriage I bravely cooked for my parents plus my in-laws - who lived next door to us. Now they had a dishwasher and we didn't. I have a lovely photo of my brother-in-law with a wheelbarrow full of dirty dishes pushing them next door to the dishwasher! Are you still sure you want to come for Christmas?
Carole
