Flu jab plus shingles jab
Our doctor is giving the shingles jab along with the flu jab. I'm going tonight for mine. Wondered if anyone has had the shingles jab and did you get any re-action?

Not old enough yet, but when I am I will. I've had a mild dose of shingles and would prefer to avoid another possibly worse one later.

Having had a very bad time with shingles in 2012 Mobietta will certainly be taking up her offer for a jab ... so she will also be interested to see if anybody gets an adverse reaction.
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

I'm having my flu jab on Saturday together with pneumonia jab but not been offered shingles innoculation - apparently it is only being offered to those in the age group 70 to 79 initially so have a few years yet to qualify but having seen how it affected my friend I will certainly take up the offer when eligible.

I was at the doctors last week & heard someone asking about the shingles jab, it is only available for those who are aged 70 or 79 & not for any other ages, my MIL was offered itJan Rosser wrote:I'm having my flu jab on Saturday together with pneumonia jab but not been offered shingles innoculation - apparently it is only being offered to those in the age group 70 to 79 initially so have a few years yet to qualify but having seen how it affected my friend I will certainly take up the offer when eligible.

Re: Flu jab plus shingles jab
Sue had shngles a few years ago and was really bad with it, but she isn't 70 yet. It will be interesting to see if they offer it to me, because I am booked for the annual flu jab in two weeks time, I shall definitely ask about it. I had a pneumonia jab a while back.
They are advertisoing ultra sound checks for some kind of swelling in a stomach artery in the surgery. In the end we shall all become hypochondriacs as we get older because of the number of things which they say we might have. I have statins which I hear may cause diabetes while at the same time protecting me from alzheimers, and tablets for blood pressure which might or might not react with the statins. In the end I think you just have to live life for the day, and hope for tomorrow, otherwise you dont enjoy what you have.

I am entitled to a flu jab because of my age and because I have asthma. I've never yet had one as I've always preferred to take my chances. Every year I consider it and decide against it. I don't know if I'm being foolish or not.

Re: Flu jab plus shingles jab
I had a phone call from my Doctors last week, offering me a free health check, which I duly took advantage of. At the end of it, I was offered the free flue jab, which I duly turned down, but no mention of a shingles jab.
I am 73 and have never had a flue jab.

I've had one every year Emjay and never had either side effects or flu during that time. It just makes your triceps a bit stiff for a day.emjay45 wrote:I am entitled to a flu jab because of my age and because I have asthma. Are you saying that if you are 71,72 etc to 78 you are not eligible for the shingles injection? Seems odd.

Yes that's what they're sayingjay-ell71 wrote:Are you saying that if you are 71,72 etc to 78 you are not eligible for the shingles injection? Seems odd.
Anyone aged 70 on September 1 2013 (born between 2/9/42 and 1/9/43) is eligible for the new shingles vaccine on the NHS.
If you were aged 79 on September 1 2013 (born between 2/9/33 and 1/9/34), you will also be able to have the shingles vaccine on the NHS as part of a catch-up programme.
If you were aged 71 to 78 on September 1 2013, your next opportunity to have the shingles vaccine will be when you reach the age of 79. The reason the shingles vaccination programme is being staggered this way, is that it would be impractical to vaccinate everyone in their 70s in a single year.
... as quoted on the NHS choices site

Thank you Winna, very clear. I cant have one then. I have had shingles in the past, does that make me immune, says she hopefully?

Afraid not, or at least I don't think so. It's the same virus that gave you Chicken Pox all those years ago - varicella zoster. The virus doesn't disappear completely but lurks around your nerves near your spinal cord and comes back to bite you later, perhaps when your immune system is suppressed. Can occur at any age but is more common in the over 50s. It's unusual to have it more than once but about one person in fifty will get it twice or more in their lifetime.jay-ell71 wrote:Thank you Winna, very clear. I cant have one then. The answer's probably the same as it is for everything: eat properly, exercise regularly, don't smoke, don't drink too much.
Sleep well.

Abdominal aortic aneurism. That one test that's definitely worth having if offered. It's what killed my Dad (the condition, not the scan) and we were told at the time it is one of the more common things that used to be just dismissed as "natural causes".Frank Manning wrote:They are advertisoing ultra sound checks for some kind of swelling in a stomach artery in the surgery. I understand from another forum ( non cruise ) that the shingles jab is a live vaccination. Which may cause a problem if you have had chemo. Might be worth asking the question to your GP

I'm planning to call into Sainsbury's on the way to work tomorrow to see whether they are taking bookings for their 'flu jabs yet. Anyone know whether they are doing it for £8 again ? Who knows, there may even be a shelf-stacker free to do the dirty deed on the spot ?!

Great, thanks. Question is, whether to get in early whilst the needle is still sharp and risk the checkout girl to be out of practice or wait until she knows what she is doing and get a blunt one !!!

Yep Flu/Singles jabs gratefully received, never had an adverse reaction, better it seems to ease the agonies of the common cold
