Completely justified.
To target someone who is dead and use the quote that they did is despicable.
Especially considering who owns them.

Re: The great UK newspapers
Good evening to you, dear sir.
The Lady C takes the Daily Mail and I do find they talk a lot of common sense. Whether their actual reporting is accurate or not is a different matter.
Have to say, though, it doesn't take me long to flick through it - very little of interest, usually.

Re: The great UK newspapers
I have only read/heard some of the comments but it all seems to be mountains/molehills to me ... especially compared to some of the genuine news items lately.
I have occasionally picked up the Daily Mail and read it and found its stories to be virtually the same as all the other papers, just the odd change of adjective etc. to wind-up people with limited comprehension skills that do not allow them to see past the spin ... but certainly it is no worse than the likes of The Mirror or The Sun or that odious rag called the Guardian (which I have also read when there is no Beano or Dandy available and I am looking something of the same intellectual equivalent).
What amazes me, across the internet, are those that comment on something simply because 'it is in the Daily Mail' ... either they are closet readers of the paper (and gullible enough to be all indignant as well as hypocritical) or they actually don't read it and therefore speak from a point of ignorance falling for internet spin. Somehow I think more people read it than let on.

Re: The great UK newspapers
We very rarely buy a national newspaper, but when we do it's normally The Mail, either on a Saturday or a Sunday. We bought The Mail yesterday when shopping, Lorraine like the magazine, which includes the TV guide.
It's interesting when you look at the circulation figures for newspapers, the 3 papers very few people claim to read, are at the top of the circulation lists.

Re: The great UK newspapers
It is a truly vile publication, pandering to the worst instincts of people who we really shouldn't pander to.
It hates everything about modern Britain. It hates people with brown faces, people of different faiths, people who speak with different accents. It hates people of different sexuality (at least publicly..). It hates people dear to me because of things they couldn't change, even if they wanted to.
That it reserves it's most idiotic vitriol for the EU and freedom of movement could be considered ironic when you consider that one of its key constituencies is the ex-pat Brits living in sunshine in Spain, but irony isn't its strong suit. If it was, we could probably make more of the fact that its owners supported Hitler right up until the point that the cleverer fascists (not a huge number, I grant you) realised the game was up. The current Viscount Rothermere is always strangely mute on the subject of his family's recent history.
It sells fear to people eager to buy it, and the fact that the crossword might be good is poor reason to ignore the facts.

I've not noticed the Admiral here for a little while - do please pass on my regards to him.Dark Knight wrote:we are dining out with AOTH and his lovely wife, so no cooking today
In the meantime, I shall have a flick through the MoS supplements and, when the Lady C returns home from work, and even quicker flick through the MoS itself. There's very little of interest in the Sunday edition of the Mail, in my view. I think she only buys it for the "loyalty club" numbers printed on the back page....

Every newspaper puts it's own angle on a news story and none of them ever get it right. Take all you read with a giant pinch of salt and you won't go far wrong.

Re: The great UK newspapers
My father-in-law was once approached by his local rag in the run-up to a mayoral election, in which he was standing, for an interview. He declined.
A couple of days later, he was horrified to read the "interview" in the paper. When he challenged them, they said it was what they thought he would have said, which was totally contrary to what he would have said. It cost him the election.
The Bristol rag reported a few years ago on the trial of a friend of mine, who had, in a moment of weakness, crossed a line. By basically lying, they made a bad situation unnecessarily worse.

I was once quoted in a local newspaper about the effect of a council action on the town centre. 'Nail in the Coffin' was the giant headline even though I had never used those words or any like them.Silver_Shiney wrote:My father-in-law was once approached by his local rag in the run-up to a mayoral election, in which he was standing, for an interview. I am not left wing (or right wing), but I tend to agree. I would not pay money for this rag because it is unable to put forward a balanced argument for anything, it is always bordering on hysteria as far as I can see. Together with The Sun, the figures show what printing populist clap trap can do for circulation.

Interesting comments on 'Have I got news for you', last Friday evening. Along with the Murdoch media the Mail hates the BBC with a vengeance.

Unfortunately the Daily Mail, is far from alone in committing many of the 'transgressions' mentioned in this thread. "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story" is a maxim that much of the tabloid press seems to live by.
