How Good is Your Grammar ?
I am often rattling on about the misuse of apostrophes and such but no one seems to care much about grammar these days. Try this little BBC quiz to see how you fare....Grammar Quiz
I am ashamed to confess I only scored 4 which has me as a "promising pedant". Probably about right really !!

Only 7 I'm afraid - and I'd always thought my grammar was pretty good.

9 out of 10
I don't agree with some of them. 'I was sat in a chair' is ok if somebody sat you there.

8 out of 10 but I confess I guessed one so perhaps I should say 7.

Re: How Good is Your Grammar ?
English Grammar was my worst subject in school, although I did manage to pass it at 'O'level. So not surprisingly I only got 4.

Only 9 for me, but I don't care - maybe I was simply lucky.

I got to the first question, Whose cats are using our neighbour's garden?
I don't know and I don't care as long as it's not mine
Gave up on the rest, as my Grammar is useless

I disagreed with a couple of them, and couldn't help but notice that their sentences tended to suffer from the absence of a full stop.

7 out of ten - the ones involving technical terms (eg gerund) - didn't have a clue what they were on about.
""The Queen arrived at the castle with the King by her side, in a dress adorned with hand-sewn embroidered dragons." What kind of mistake is this?" Obviously a fashion mistake

Whatever the reason, the King's dress has got to be better than the Emperor's new clothes!david63 wrote:

6/10 for me. Like some others I hadn't a clue what the technical terms meant. I'm a bit pedantic on the rules I know, but clearly don't know it all!

6 for me too.
I got the cat one right, but it was not clear how many neighbours owned the garden.
The technical ones caught me out although I recognised the errors but not the technical terms. Gerund, wassat?
I had not thought of that interpretation of "sat in a chair" Pedant indeed.
PS What does " Pedant " mean

It means you spend your life fussing about things that don't really matter such as where you put a semi-colon.jay-ell71 wrote:

A very poor 5 out of 10 and one of those was a wild guess.

Re: How Good is Your Grammar ?
Although many people struggle to punctuate properly (myself included when it comes to semi-colons, though I think I'm OK with apostrophes), it makes it much easier to read a piece of writing which has been written using correct grammar and punctuation. If it's well written you don't even notice it. If you have to read it twice to make sense of it there may well be something wrong with the punctuation or grammar.emjay45 wrote:It means you spend your life fussing about things that don't really matter such as where you put a semi-colon.jay-ell71 wrote:

I bet you've had to read this at least twice
