IP Addresses

Unread post by david63 »

There has recently been an update to the forum software which, amongst other things, has increased security of the forum.

One check that is now being done is to check your IP address every time you access the forum against what are called blacklists - these are lists which contain suspicious IP addresses, normally related to spam. Whilst checking the log entries for these I have noticed that there are a few (and it is only a few) members who are appearing on this list. Now this is nothing to worry about as you will, in all probability, have done nothing wrong but has occurred due to the fact that IP addresses are reused and that someone at some point has misused that IP address.

What does this mean

The effect of this to you is that you may have problems with email as mail may not be being delivered either to you or mail that you send being delivered to the recipient - it is also possible that you may not be able to access some web sites (particularly banking sites).

I will be keeping an eye on this log and when I notice a member appearing then I will send you a PM to advise you of the fact.

What can you do about it?

There is no "quick fix" to get your IP address off the blacklists so I would suggest that you reboot your router (just switch it off and back on again or unplug it and plug it back in again). This will have the effect of assigning you a different IP address which should alleviate the problem.

Another route would be to inform your ISP of this as they will have more power to get the address de-listed.
