Great, thanks. Question is, whether to get in early whilst the needle is still sharp and risk the checkout girl to be out of practice or wait until she knows what she is doing and get a blunt one !!!

No, they are all single dose. They have a vet with a dart gun, so they can get you when you pick things up from the bottom shelf

Apparently our surgery had 20 doses of the shingles vaccine and all have been given , no more coming so not even all those eligible will get it.

Well, it's now a week since I had my jabs. Pleased to say that I've had no reaction to either of them. Pleased to have got them out of the way before my next cruise in four weeks time. FO this time though on Braemar to the Canaries. Really looking forward to it as its about 16 months since the last one.

Yes mine were done by the doctor. In fact two doctors, one for each jab.

We had the flu jab this morning, and I asked about the shingles jab and was told (??), that you have to be exactly 70, or exactly 79. Trouble is it was such a production line, that we were whistled out before I had chance to qestion the logic of that.

I felt like one of Adams sheep on Countryfile being given some dose.

Yes it was like that when I went. I should think there was a queue of at least 40 people. You're right about the age for shingles, I can't see the logic either, I think it's because of the cost that its not available for everyone but don't know how they decided which age group to give it to.

It's obvious really ...

If everybody in the Country aged from 70 to 106 went at the same time then the queues would run for miles and the supplies required would be impossible to achieve as would the number of jabbers.

So 70 + 79 this time round then it will be 71 and 78 and then ..... ?

As I am not too good at maths perhaps someone can explain when I might qualify for the shingles jab. I will be 70 in April 2014. Answers will be gratefully received. ALSO as my husband's birthday is on the 30th September and the qualifying birth date for this jab is the 1st September (he was 73 this year) will he ever qualify before the cut off age of 80???? I've got a headache thinking about it!

I'm surprised that people would turn down the flu jab. flu can be extremely nasty. Why take the chance?

If your husband is 73, he must qualify?

What you do want to avoid are statins! They are plain bad for you if you have no heart disease or stroke. A friend has suffered a cough for 2 years and aching joints, not to mention feeling a bit foggy in the brain. She came off the statins and all symptoms gone. The only reason for being on them was raised cholesterol. Raised cholesterol in folk older than 70 is good for you. There is a court case starting in the States right now as the drug Lipitor is now known to cause Type 1 diabetes!

Statins leaflets carry warnings about the possibility of reactions with some blood pressure tablets, I had 6.6 cholesterol, and my Doc prescribed statins ( Arcadia; excessive ice cream consumption). The aching joints syndrome is very real, but is linked to the reaction with Amlodipine I am told.

I was put on Atorvastatin after my small (!) heart attack last year along with the aspirin, beta blockers and ACE inhibitors. It took me several months to work out that the statin was causing me all sorts of grief. Night sweats where I would wake up soaking, all my joints ached, total lethargy and foggy brain. What triggered my realisation was that I was taking the statin last thing at night and by the end of the afternoon and into the evening I was feeling much more drive and energy. I stopped them last March and I instantly felt much better, so much so that all my associates noticed the change without me telling them. My cholesterol is now 4.7 and my HbA1c is 51 without any medication. Still a little way to go but with a bit of care about what you eat and regular exercise you can make a big difference. I don't know whether I shall die sooner as a result of not taking the statin but at least life is now worth living.

Whatever you decide, consult your doctor first.

It does seem a bit odd to me that the government are bleating about the logisitcs of vaccinating the entire age group against shingles when they are already doing that with the 'flu jab ! It has to be no more than a cost-limiting exercise.

This article in the Daily Mail yesterday does rather put it into perspective.
