Missed out on the Royal Mail flotation

Unread post by Ray Scully »

Don't worry you will continue to miss out when the cost of the service goes up and the quality goes down.
The small profit all the 'sids' made from the Bg flotation pails into insignificance when viewed against todays fuel cost.

cant say as I missed out on anything, I don't use royal mail very often, we use a different courier for our mail
Fuel doesn't impact me as I have a fully financed company car and we live in a brand new highly insulated, fuel efficient house

so not sure what I am missing out on?

Whenever we cruise, we use Keepsafe to stop any mail being delivered while we're away. Unless Royal Mail continues to deliver private mail, there doesn't seem to be much point in doing it any more.
Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

Royal mail could reduce the cost of postage if they stopped dropping their elastic bands on my drive and re cycled them instead of having to buy more.

I don't imagine anything will change on that front, at least not in the short term. As I understand it Royal Mail will still be obliged to provide the delivery service as now, and in any case presumably they get an income from those other companies for delivering their stuff.

The posties also get a sum of money for delivering all that junk mail ... but they get even more if you suppress it.

Now ' that ' is Spanish practises and will have to stop under the new regime

I can't remember their names (Datapost?), but there are a number of alternative postal services that collect your mail and charge a bit less than Royal Mail. Having collected the mail, they then give it to Royal Mail to deliver.

So, they are in it for a profit but are still undercutting RM. RM won't be delivering it for them as a charitable gesture. Methinks Royal Mail are grossly overcharging the rest of us.

An understanding of the basics for a start.

If you have fuel paid for by your employer you'll know you pay a whacking penalty through your tax code for the privilege. It is adjusted every year to take into account the cost of , er, fuel.

As for the new house, it's likely to have very good thermal efficiencies relative to the old house down the road, but it could never be described as 'highly insulated'. Compared to Scandanavian standards it's a draughty, thin-windowed ice-box. (ok maybe a slight exaggeration). Even with the best insulation, fuel prices are still very, very significant. (it's consistently one of the top issues of debate in those very places where insulation really is good).

I think the problem here is the universal service RM are obliged to provide. If you try to get one of the others to take your letter from Shetland to the Scillies it will cost you a lot more than RM, or they will simply decline to provide the service. My birthday cards via RM to my Godchildren ten miles away are subsidising the fact that it would cost just the same if they lived in the back of beyond.

I used to work for Royal Mail and my son in law is a postman, this is true, many companies charge for deliveries then get Royal Mail to take them the last few mikes where they are remote.

In fact in Scotland there is a rock that they leave stuff behind that is actually on the system as a postal drop.

dear oldies on the breadline

I thank you for your replies to my post
I sometimes forget that the increase in the price of a stamp may be make or break for some people and that fuel cost may force some of you into fuel and transport poverty

but just think, if you didn't go on cruise holidays, you would be quids in

with deepest sympathy for your economic plight

sometimes, just sometimes, people don't have to worry as such about the price of a stamp or fuel costs
it is not being a smart a*se , just a fact of life
however there is little point moaning about these cost , when you go on expensive cruise holidays?
