Ornaments

Unread post by The Tinker »

Downsized my ornament collection today - just wondered what is the worst ornament you have ever bought or been given?

Ours had to be a Chelsea FC gnome sat on a mushroom from Malta I believe - given to my daughter by MIL.
She refused to take it with her when she left home so today I binned it and satisfyingly its head fell off as
it hit the bin floor

For years I didn't have any ornaments because I said I would only buy when I could afford what I wanted, I love Lladro and have quite a collection, I also love Royal Doulton and Coalport figures and have quite a few of these, I particularly like the plain white Coalport figures, very plain and simple but elegant ( or I think so )

Fortunately no-one has ever bought me anything I don't like as family and friends realise I don't appreciate being bought anything for the house, I think a persons individuality should be respected ....of course I don't include gifts from children/grandchildren in my comments as they are usually unique :D :D

I do have one quite large collection - but it doesn't suit the house we are in at the moment, so it is all safely packed away. I don't honestly think that I have ever bought an ornament I regretted, but I have received gifts in the past which I have also 'put away in a very safe place' and these gifts are so 'special' that they have never seen the light of day. They won't be seeing the light of day, either.

The worst ornaments are usually the tacky gee-gaws people bring back from holiday as a present .. because you sort of know that you have to display them somewhere for a while ... until they forget about them.

Friends??? once gave us a really tacky figuarine, I can't find the words to describe just how awful it was. My colleague at work said her gran loved things like that so I gave it to her on the understanding if the friends ever came round we would have to borrow it back.

My mum's friend insisted on buying my mum rather hideous ornaments, which my mum was too kind/polite to say she didn't like, and had them on display.

After she died, my mum's friend told me how much my mum loved those ornaments ..... My mum obviously told a few white lies in that respect.

When clearing the house I did bin them, and it gave me a certain satisfaction on my mum's behalf!

Lady D has a large collection of Swarovski Crystal, which is in a display cabinet

When I got married all the way back in 1968 my mother's neighbours gave me a fruit set. Now for those of you too young to remember it consisted of a large bowl and six small bowls (for your tinned fruit and ideal milk  ) but it has never been out of the attic simply because it is so ugly and PURPLE - Why I haven't thrown it out I don't know :? Probably feel guilty inflicting it on anyone else

When we got married we got quite a few ornaments from Ainsley, waterford crystal and other brands at the time .. over the years many ended up in the roof space (where they still are) or got used as ash trays (much to my mothers disgust).

Most of my Russian/Soviet matroysha dolls have been relegated to the spare room. These days, we tend to only buy fridge magnets, otherwise the house would just fill up with all sorts of stuff.

Same as us, we usually just get a fridge magnet.

Those matroysha dolls have a real attitude problem - they are so full of themselves...

I'm not a fan of lots of "stuff" preferring a very minimalist look, so the pieces I do have out are very few and far between indeed. I don't care for the popular figurines as have been mentioned, but have a couple of nice sandstone and soapstone pieces - but very few see light of day!

One wedding present was horrendous - so old fashioned. Had one of my elderly Aunties bought it, I could have understood. It was from a Cousin

Despite putting it on top of a rickety wardrobe (in a spare bedroom) - well I'd got to give it the chance of breaking :lolno: - it eventually went to a White Elephant stall. I was running this stall and someone did buy the Vase - they thought it was wonderful. I didn't say I'd made the donation :silent:

Talking of monogrammed cushions etc... I have to admit I have one... Not quite a monogram as such.. its the words

"Don't wanna close my eyes
Don't wanna fall asleep
'Cause I'd miss you, babe
And I don't wanna miss a thing"

Alex got them embroidered onto a cushion for me.
