English food in Southampton

Unread post by ChesterfieldJohn »

Hi,

We are cruising in January from Southampton and my daughter and son in law are taking us and we need a good pub/ restaurant that does English food,
preferably that do steaks.

My son in law is a funny eater and only likes steaks and Sunday lunches really :(.

All suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks John.

P.S. not to expensive like the Monocled Mutineer would use , I am paying :)

English food? You'll be lucky ;)

There are lots of places, but they all seem to have some sort of theme.

We always use this Steak House prior to a cruise in Southampton, we have found it very good, it is opposite the Mayflower Theatre.

On one cruise in which we stayed in Southampton the previous night, we first ate here, and then popped over to the Mayflower to see a show.

Certainly not in MM's price bracket.

There is a car park within a short walk to both.

Ranchos in the High Street, or Buffalo Bills in Commercial Road. But I prefer Ranchos myself.

There's a fairly decent Harvester-type eatery behind the Tesco superstore in Bursledon. Might be a bit far out for you, though

If they are lovers of ' Vintage Inns ' then maybe the ' The Cowherds ' will suit everybody's tastes.

When we were staying at the Southampton Hilton once I had a meal which could easily be described as traditional British - involving steak and ale pie.

It was delicious - and while the filling was superb the pastry was a bit fragile; nonetheless it was lovely.

What about the restaurants in some of the hotels such as the Holiday Inn or Grand Harbour?

I would second the Cowherds, we've eaten there several times and the food has been lovely.

Hey Ho

Yes, The Cowherds is a a slightly "up market" pub with an affordable menu and sited on Soton Common, ample free car parking

However, the much frowned upon J D Witherspoon is good value for money, two in close proximity to the Terminals, bot in the Soton High street

Happy Eating and have a great cruise
