Re: The meaning of Christmas
That was brilliant Alan. My display is similar but slightly less subtle.
DK, come December your house is going to look like a missing tooth in an otherwise happy smile. Get some lights. Bah Humbug.
HO HO HO....not long to go.
Regards

It is the only time of the year, apart from our summer holiday. when all three of us are on holiday together. It is a time of unashamed self indulgence when we eat too much, drink too much and spend an obscene amount on presents. For us Christmas is just a big party enjoyed by our friends and family alike.
Obviously for many Christmas is a time of great religious significance but not for me and not for most of my large circle of family and friends, most of whom are not religious and never have been. It tickles me when I hear about the commercialisation of Christmas as though it's something new. It isn't. I am fifty years old and in that time all that has really changed is that where I once wrote out a Christmas list with pen and paper now Miss AOTH produces a power point presentation.
Six weeks today we put up our Christmas decorations, and I can't wait.
Ho Ho Ho

Re: The meaning of Christmas
Thanks Sue, I enjoyed reading that with Christmas coming ever closer. In my contribution last year I said that I had an old reel to reel tape which had a recording of my family opening Christmas presents back in, I think 1964, but that I couldn't play it on our old recorder. Well I found a reconditioned one on ebay being sold by a lovely man who specialised in restoring old recorders. So I bought one which played perfectly and one Sunday when I was on my own - husband was out somewhere, I played the two Christmas tapes I had, with me a teenager (sounded awful!) and my parents, both gone now. It was lovely, if a little sad, to hear them again, yes a few tears were shed but it bought back to me all the excitement of Christmas that I had as a youngster and, I think, still have now!

I would give anything to hear my dad's voice again. Tears are welling up here.
I'm with on the excitement thing though...I'm more excited than the children are!!

Re: The meaning of Christmas
Carole, That is a wonderful memento you now have, in fact amazing.
Sue, With videos on phones and cameras plus camcorders I am sure your holidays and time spent with your husband children and grandchildren will be well recorded.
Memories last for ever but the past is far too painful for me and I block it away.

Andrea,
It seems I'm in the same boat as you - and I don't revisit the past if I can help it.
However, there's the now and the future - and thank goodness for all the recording bits and bobs!
I've just got a new camera - with a smashing burst and a super smooth video too, so I'm making loads of 'now' stuff and planning (and learning how to) for the future ..... like December.
