Re: BOGOF
Can't understand why some of this food isn't given to the food banks. Huge amount thrown out by Tesco... pictures on News today. All looked good enough to eat. Seems a bit unkind to target Tesco, I imagine all the supermarkets are the same.
I think we have to take some of the blame for waste as we now expect our veggies and fruit to look and feel perfect, but it has gone too far now. BOGOF... no good to us, or any household with just one or two people in it.

The only reason that fruit and veg have to look perfect is because the EU says so. That's why its so expensive. It doesn't matter to me what shape it's in as long as its edible.
What happens to the imperfect fruit and veg? Thrown away possibly. That's a terrible waste.

Re: BOGOF
One possible issue with donating masses of food to food banks is that it may cut off some revenue from small corner shops.
I know there is an argument that says they would not have bought in the shops anyway but, when you give people something for nothing then it is considered to have no value, and will be abused (as is currently happening).

Re: BOGOF
My son works at a well known supermarket they are not allowed to donate food as it's against health and safety rules a lot of the wastage is food that has been handled by the public or past sell by date broken seals recalls food that has been returned in days gone by it was given to farmers for pigs but that's all stoppedDark Knight wrote:found the article
Tesco wasted 30.000 tonnes of food in the first 6 months of the year....beggars belief, why dont they get organised with local charities and give it to food banks and soup kitchens
it was mainly fruit and bakery items
My son told me a story that a large screen tv sealed box had been opened by someone they had to put it in the skip as they could not be sure that someone had tampered with it

Hab, I have heard that before about food but believe there has probably been a lot more about to the story about the TV (maybe they know it had been deliberately tampered with or it was a non-working return or discontinued line?) ... I have often seen open boxes in supermarkets where they have just been stuck back down with a bit of tape.
