Is This A New Trick by Amazon?

Unread post by david63 »

Like most of us I tend to browse Amazon whenever I am considering buying anything. I have recently been looking at one particular item. Today when I looked at this item it said that there was "Only 1 left in stock" so I ordered it (I wanted it anyway). A few minutes later when I checked the message had reverted to "In stock".

I cannot say that I have noticed this before - is this a new ploy to get us to part with our money?

Perhaps the lorry turned up with new stock just as you hit the order button ;)

Pretty standard marketing ploy on Thomson cruise site.

hurry, only 3 cabins left

Try again a few days later and it still says the same even if you have booked one.

I could be wrong here, but there is something in the back of my mind that this was asked on another board a while back. If it is fulfilled by Amazon then it may be being supplied by different wholesalers .. the stock levels for the current wholesaler have maybe been used up so it reverts to its secondary supply.

What worries me more about Amazon and is always worth checking, is that the same item may be for sale on more than one page and there can be significant price differences. A while back I was tracking a new hard disk (about £90) but then I got their daily email and there was the drive I was after at £120 ... after a few clicks I realised that there were 2 separate pages one at £90, the other at £120 for exactly the same product and both being sold by Amazon.

I think though that more often than not where you get the different prices it is because they are different sellers through Amazon - I cannot recall seeing the same product at different prices being sold by Amazon.

Another thing that you also have to watch is that it is the same product. many a time I have seen the same product description with different prices only to find that they are different models.

Also some items seem more, but do not include postage, whereas others have free postage.

As far as I am aware Amazon is a clearing house for multiple retailers not a supplier as such
I look for rare ish books from the 1930's to the 1950's and none of them come from Amazon they come from third party suppliers and it is often worth going to them direct and cutting Amazon out of the loop
