Useless BBC

During our recent holiday several programmes failed to record or clashed on our Sky+ box, I managed to find all of them through Sky's on demand catch up facility except one BBC1 Holby episode which was not showing on their iPlayer, it appears they only show the previous weeks programmes.
However from the BBC iPlayer website I used their help page to send them a message and asked the simple question, does iPlayer have a feature where I can locate old episodes, rather like Sky's box sets, this is the reply I received, now maybe its me but I don't think somehow that this answers the question.

Occasionally an issue can take longer to resolve and we apologise for the inconvenience this has caused, especially if the programme has now expired.

Don't talk to me about BBC iplayer. I have BT Vision and BT in their infinite wisdom decided that when I recently renewed my contract that they would upgrade my BT Vision box. This they did only to find that BBC iplayer did not work on it. After seceral call to their Indian call centre I found out that there was, and had been for about three months, a problem with BBC iplayer on that version of the BT Vision box and it would take another two months to fix - and no I was unable to use my old box.

Personally I think that BBC iplayer is a load of rubbish - it is painfully slow, but might work better if I was on Infinity (which is not available in my area until late next year)

Using a DVD / Humax Box seems to work a treat and negates the need for any of these new fangled one trick pony type gizmo boxes.

Just imagine the outcry on pages like this if the BBC employed people to sit around until someone came along and said, (in terms) 'I've stuffed up recording some programmes and now I'd like you to tell me what to do about it''

I am not going to join the media outcry against the BBC. Having had Sky in the past, and now Freesat I can record whatever I want, and the fact is the highest quality programmes are provided by the BBC. That is why we discontinued Sky. We were paying £45 per month for a load of rubbish plus the excellent BBC which we were already paying for and the other terrestrial stations which are not bad compared to Sky.

The cost of the License fee for which I get loads of choice on Freeview is a quarter of the price of Sky and I still have to pay the license fee on top. Go to the USA if you want to see what having no excellent TV service is like. BBC leads the world in programme quality and long may it continue.

Frank, I wasn't complaining about the quality of BBC programmes, although I could, just the pointlessness of the reply to my query.
DK, being called a luddite by you I take as a compliment and I wasn't seeking your bailout just asking the BBC if their iPlayer was as useful as everyone elses, and to be honest I still don't know.

Well at least you got a lengthy reply from the BEEB, OK it was not the response you wanted

Foolishly I was was swayed to change my mobile account to Vodafone pay as you go having purchased my Smartphone from them

I have had so many irritating problems, and have sought help from their dedicated help line

All replies were computer generated and of no help whatsoever to resolve my problem

That is not true Stephen, there are plenty of new BBC programmes being rolled out continually. I know because I watch them.

Hi Graham,
I changed my Vodaphone account from pay as you go to a monthly tarrif which covers me for texts, since doing so my monthly bill has not been higher than £22 when I made quite a few calls, and most months it is £10,75. Why dont you go into the Vodaphone shop just below M&S in Bournemouth. I found them really helpful with regard to tarrifs and costs.

I think in summary the BBC reply was "no". At present for the most part programmes are only available for 7 days - a rights issue as much as a techie one as I understand it.

However, I did hear the new Director General say he planned to change this to give a longer lifespan as money allows.

We could, of course, expect the same facilities from the BBC as are available from Sky, if we were prepared to pay the same price, but we're not. And bear in mind you pay twice for Sky - once for the subscription and again for the adverts.

The BBC's not perfect in many ways, but it still outshines many broadcasters world wide.
