Storm Force Winds
“Well you may have heard there is a hurricane on its way”
“Well, don’t worry, there isn’t”??????
Batten down the hatches...the wind is picking up in the Midlands...what’s it like down your way?

Re: Storm Force Winds
Very windy already here in Poole. In both of the last two hurricanes I had to drive back down the M3 late at night, not a pleasant experience. We shall be battening down the hatches and heaving too tonight. Just hope everything is still there tomorrow.

We are further up north and there is nothing more than a gentle sway on the trees ... at the minute

It's blowing a LOT here and did yesterday as well. In fact yesterday when walking on the clifftops behind our house, the wind was so strong, I couldn't keep myself upright. So what tonight and tomorrow brings I dread to think!

I would not like to be in a caravan tonight, especially one on a cliff top site.

Re: Storm Force Winds
Well it's a bright sunny Sunday Morning here so far in the Costa del Clacton, lovely blue skies, a bit windy, which is expected to build up during the day.
Don't know about battening everything down, but if it remains like it is, Lorraine wants me to mow the lawn later, when the grass has dried out a little.
They are advising to stay away from sea fronts, so have stayed away from ours, though at the moment I would imagine it would be a pleasant walk.
I understand they have reduced the wind expected forecast , for the Ports of Harwich/Felixstowe.
I remember the 1987 one, I had to go and collect Lorraine from work, she had been working nights, had to abandon the car on the last stretch and walk, large trees had up rooted and were blocking the road. We also had a small woods near where we lived, not a single tree was left standing.

Looking at the BBC weather app, the worst it's going to be here in Costa Del Maldon is 35mph winds around 6am tomorrow morning for short while.

Our small dog hates the strong wind .. she goes out the back and if there is strong wind it can blow her over in mid-piddle ... I know I shouldn't laugh, but I doGillD46 wrote:.... the wind was so strong, I couldn't keep myself upright ...

Just a slight breeze here in Derbyshire, bright sunshine then it tries to rain but very pleasant sat in the conservatory today.
Change that ... the slight breeze in the last 5 minutes has changed to quite blowy

Re: Storm Force Winds
Here, near Southampton it is dry at the moment (poured earlier) but with quite a wind. It's our village carnival today - two processions, one at 3pm, the other at 7pm. Think the 3pm one will be ok but not sure about the evening one. It's not quite the event that it used to be - we used to have about 40,000 people there but now, partly thanks to Health and Safety. When I first saw the event, about 36 years ago(!) there were horses in the procession - not now, unsafe, might charge into the crowd. When my husband was a boy he used to get paid sixpence to carry a jam jar with a light inside to light up the procession - not allowed now. The committee has to pay to have an ambulance and security people. Consequently what was a huge affair only not that long ago has turned into a small procession. Such a shame.
When my husband was Chairman of the Committee we had military bands heading the procession and fantastic they were too - too expensive now. Although one year it was raining and the band commander said he would go ahead but if any of the instruments were damaged by the rain then the Committee would be liable - I think it was the Marines. So, they didn't play that year!
While I've been typing this the wind has died down a bit so we'll see. We have friends coming in to watch the procession - we live on the route so can sit in our bedroom window - yes I know the true watcher would be out on the pavement but we like comfort! Just made an apple pie which smells rather good!

Re: Storm Force Winds
We'll as I said earlier, I have now mown the Lawn , tidied up and tied in what I could in the borders.
Whilst out in the Garden, I could hear the Jet Skiers down the sea front, and I would bet with this wind, there are a few wind surfers also down there enjoying themselves.
Me, I am now sat in the conservatory, with the sun shining through the windows, drinking a cup of coffee, and Lorraine has the Sunday roast in the oven, and vegetables all prepared.
Grandson had no Rugby today to go and watch.

The branches on the shrubs in our garden are swaying, but no worse than they often do as we are quite high up (our wheelie bin blows over if we don't secure it to the wall), so it hasn't got to Shropshire yet.

I’m hoping the wind bypasses Mid Wales as our caravan is in a very exposed position.
Wind increasing in Worcestershire accompanied by blustery showers.

Re: Storm Force Winds
Earlier this morning I went down to our local Morrisons store to get the Sunday paper and I couldn't work out why the car park was chocker. I had never seen it so full, not a space to be seen and cars all over the place trying to park. Of course the good lady had the answer straight off when I got home and told her. Everyone was panic buying in case the world ends later. Idiots
Why is it the slightest whiff of bad weather and everyone goes mental and starts buying up the shops. How long do they think the storm is going to last, if it ever happens of course, six months or more.
The petrol station was as bad.
