Past their sell by date?

Unread post by ChesterfieldJohn »

Hi Everyone.

While I was doing the ironing this morning I had the Andrew Marr show on.

Ronnie Wood was on this talking about the Stones.

Now when I was young I remember seeing them live, along with the Beatles, the Who and many more of the acts during that period.

Now I watched the Stones on TV at Glastonbury and have seen Paul Mccartney on TV a few times recently and thought that they were poor compared to when I saw them.

I was just wondering if they are past their sell by dates and should retire , or is my memory of them better than it should be?

I know the sound isn't as good on TV, but even allowing for this I was disappointed.

I'm well past my sell by date John. Gently maturing like a ripe Dorset blue vinnie.

I suppose it stands to reason that their voices change with age and they won't sound the same. I too saw the Beatles at the Hammersmith Odeon. I remember I was working at the time and couldn't get time off to go and queue to get tickets. My brother was on holiday from school so he agreed to go an queue providing I asked my girlfriend to come as he fancied her at the time! We were about four rows from the front of the stalls - an amazing evening.

I also saw the Stones, not my favourite but my boyfriend at the time loved them. That was at Wembley and we didn't have such good seats - we saw them in the distance. I do remember when I was at school in the 6th form one Monday morning a girl came in and said she'd been to Richmond at the weekend and to a club and saw this new group she thought were quite good - they were called "The Rolling Stones".

Well we were so pleasantly surprised last night

We went to see The Hollies at Sheffield City Hall. It's many years since we last saw them live. Granted only 2 out of the 6 are from the original line up. Their vocals were superb and each one of them had more than one musical instrument talent

Such a pleasant change :D

I can't talk after anyone because I'm sure I'm past by sell by date also

I was never a great lover of the Beatles or the Stones ... now mention Rod Stewart :D I'm enjoying his music the second time around, not everyone's cup of tea but he still does it for me

Hi John,

Whilst performing in a choir I’ve spent many hours listening to “well past their sell by date (solo) singers”. Some, I have no doubt were fantastic singers in their prime but why oh why do they carry on singing until they make complete fools of themselves...most trying to recapture the adulation of day’s gone pass?

Some of them would do well to remember, singing should be a pleasure for both performer and Audience.

Regards

Keith

Have never liked the Beatles especially Paul MCartney, but do like the Rollings Stones.

I rather enjoyed the Rollings Stones at Glastonbury, especially with the addition of one of the originals Mick Taylor, even more so when listening to them on you tube, with my Bose noise reducing Headphones.

So as far as I am concerned McCartney can retire whenever he likes, but still enjoy listening to the Rolling Stones.

Yep my wife is a fan of Elton John so I was forced to go and watch him at Chatsworth a few years ago.

He was so bad we left before the end because my wife wanted to.

Unknown that is.

Reference Rod Stewart
last time he performed on Striclty, it took him over a dozen attempts to get it right and he had an autocue the size of a wall
perhaps they are driven my the need to stay famous or by the money

Once again I have to agree with DK :(

I met Rod Stewart when I worked at Stoke Town Hall as a waiter.
He was awful snotty and arrogant.

I am a huge meatloaf fan and have seen him many times in concert
but after one concert a few years ago, I felt his live days were over and I have not been to see him since
that said his studio albums are still good

It’s worse than that DK....They surround themselves with those who keep telling them how good they still are...but not how bad they sound.

John

You could be right, I remember them very well when they were at their peak, and I still would have loved to have been in that audience at Glastonbury, watching and listening to them. Thought they were great.

I watched a show on TV not so long back of Elton John, and could not understand a word he was singing.

As for Rod Stewart, I have a copy of his Complete Great American Song Book albums, and still enjoy listening to him on my IPad

All being said I do think some artists have the ability to retrain their voices to a style that can still come across ok ish.

Does he ??? he has Scottish roots but that's about it, never been aware he has pretended to be anything he isn't !!

Snotty and arrogant ??? well I guess you could say that about 95% of celebrities but let's not forget what they do is a job and they have their right to a certain amount of privacy just like the rest of us.

It matters not what your personal opinion is about someone you either like their music or you don't .... it's called choice :D :D

Like everything in life, we all have our personal preferences, as they say one persons meat, is another persons poison, and music is no different.

As for the Rolling Stones at Glastonbury, no other Headliner act, has ever attracted a 100,000 crowd in front of the pyramid stage.

I like this which was written in the Guardian about them

"What's striking about the songs they perform is how thrillingly ramshackle the Stones sound. In contrast to most of their stadium-filling peers, you can hear the imperfections, the occasional fluffed notes. They sound like a real band, rather than bored multimillionaires going through the motions, which adds a genuine edge to the big hits:"
