Advice on new vacuum cleaner

Help - just cleaning up after the family visit and my Dyson upright has given up the ghost it is probably about 10 years old so due for replacement.

I really don't know what to buy to replace it - anyone got any experience of Miele cylinders or can recommend a make you've been happy with - I've been on the John Lewis site trawling through all the options and my head aches

I have a mixture of carpet, tiles, Amtico and wood so must be multi purpose oh and I have a small dog.

We have a Vax Power Pet 2 which is designed for use with pet hairs and it performs the job of vacuuming well. I suppose much depends whether you wany an upright or a cylinder (which this one is). The only criticism I have is that it seems to need emptying regularly and the filters need brushing to remove any build up of dust otherwise it does lose power but we have been pleased with it especially when I hear of the horror stories from those who have paid big money and had trouble with theirs. It seemed to come with good reviews and was reasonably priced so we went for it.

My very efficient cleaner is called Mandy, she is a lovely lady, and cleans gfw towers to perfection at a mere £10 per hour

We have been through just about every make of vacuum from cheap to expensive and the one that has stood out and lasted longer than all the others put together is the little red Henry ... The bags are cheap and it doesn't clog up. Look out for the NVR? one with wider wbeelbase at the back (the narrower wheelbase HVRhas a habit of toppling (apparently)

We used to have a Vax vacuum/shampooer and I wish we'd never replaced it. We've been using a Panasonic "cylinder" for the last three years. Useless. We've now acquired my mum's Vax upright, which is too heavy for her.

Mobietta agrees with Ken about Numatic but she prefers her pink ' Hetty '.

Henry vacuum cleaners are good but you cannot beat a Dyson for removing pet hairs.

Had our Miele cylinder for around 12 years now without a single problem. When it finally goes we'll get another. You do have to buy bags of course but it's never put us off.
We also have a dog and it's great for pet hair.

Seebo has served us well. Miele is a good brand. We wont buy Dyson on principle after he sacked his factory workers and moved production to China.

We have only had two vacuum cleaners in 25 years and neither has been expensive. Meanwhile my sister has had Dysons and seems to go through them like wildfire. Every two or three years she is buying a new one. Not sure whether this is an issue with Dysons or the fact my sister likes shopping.

My mother has a Hoover upright and it is so heavy you get a real workout in a very short space of time. Even as a fella I find it very heavy.

I've only had one Dyson and before that Hoovers both upright and cylinder. I do find the Dyson heavy and that is why I decided to go back to a cylinder.

My sister's not fussy what she's shopping for, just as long as she's in the shops. I'm sure all the shop and store holders know her by name and if you want to know how much anything is she's a fount of knowledge!!
She once saw a coat in a window display in a charity shop and fancied it. It was only when she tried it on she realised it was the same coat she had donated to them!!! What a muppet!!

I'm another Dyson fan. My daughter has a dog so periodically I have to remove dog hairs and it's great for that. Yes it is heavy but it really does the job. My daughter has had three vacuum cleaners while since I bought my Dyson. I prefer uprights to cylinders but I guess that's a personal choice.

before you get rid, contact Dyson and get a service engineer booked, it is about £80 and includes all the parts and labour, we had ours done and it was a like a new vac, they replaced the brushes, the seals and the cable , all in the service cost

I agree with this. One of ours became blocked and after having the service engineer out,it was totally as good as new.

I agree with this. One of ours became blocked and after having the service engineer out,it was totally as good as new.

I did wonder whether to contact Dyson - tried it again this morning but there is the most horrible burning smell - may be a blockage somewhere. I think I would still like to get a cylinder anyway for convenience really but will give Dyson a ring on Monday and see what they say.
