I haven't a clue what to buy my husband for Xmas and thought he might like a Kindle but I haven't the faintest idea of which is best to buy, I'm not particularly bothered about price as I know he will use it ( he already downloads books to his ipad ) I just thought a kindle would be much lighter so would welcome suggestions.
So my main question is can books be downloaded from our local library ( he does this on the ipad ) or do I have to buy them from somewhere and if I do how easy is it to download, we will be away over Xmas so I'd like to put some of his favourite authors on in advance but being totally thick with anything technical ( yes I am really ) I don't know where to start.

Well Iv got one, but Im no help to you.
Alex does all the downloading on ours. He has an Amazon account and does it through that. I take pics on my phone or bar code books I like, tell him and then the next time I look they are all on my kindle.
Iv no idea how much they cost.
I have a Kobo - husband and daughter selected the same thing - and we are all very happy to say that we frequently download books from public libraries free of charge.
All you need to do is to actually belong to a branch (or County Library), and then you can get registered online with them - and it's that easy. Books can easily be renewed, so if you take a book on a cruise and haven't finished it (or started it, if you are having a really good cruise), just go online and renew it.
Yes, with Kobo there are still books which you can download from Kobo free, and also you can access books to buy.
We've used our Kobos everywhere and anywhere with no problem at all, and that includes safely using them in-flight.
I have the basic kindle and also read books on my ipad, which is synced with it. When you set up the kindle, it asks you if you have an amazon account and then registers the kindle to Amazon. It's very, very easy to use. Many books are free, many more are only a pound or two and even more expensive books are a little cheaper than in paper form.

IT has built in WiFi but you can connect to a computer with a cable
I have a BT home hub so I just go to the Amazon kindle book shop, choose my book. Click the buy now with one click button and the book is in the kindle less than 10 seconds later!.
I think you can't get books from your library (wrong format) but not sure.
I brought the good lady a Kindle Paperwhite last Christmas which she loves. You can use your Kindle to download ebooks direct from Amazon to your Kindle. See the links below for other choices of both Kindle and ebooks.
Now that's a plus .. I have an Amazon account so hopefully someone will come along and explain in ( very ) simple terms how to do it
I have 2 Kindles one is the smaller version without the keypad to take on my cruises. I download books from Amazon sometimes you can get free ones and some only cost a very small amount. Believe me if I have no problem you certainly won't.
I'm thinking of having a Kindle fire for Christmas, although I may be told that my new computer was my Christmas present.
If I was going to get a kindle I would look at the kindle Fire HD, or the very latest Kindle Fire HDX
Lorraine has the basic kindle for reading books, but since she bought the Kindle Fire she hardly ever uses the basic one, because with the Kindle fire you can access the net and your Emails etc, similar to the IPad.
She buys her books from Amazon, although our son has downloaded hundreds of books for her onto our computer, and she just transfer them to the Kindle as required.
Her kindle is also synced to my IPad on which I have a Kindle app, so I also have access to the books she has on her Kindle and her kindle account, can also store them in my cloud account.
I would think if you can access books from your library to the IPad, you should then be able to sync them across to the Kindle.
If you can use an IPad, you can certainly use a Kindle fire, and purchasing books from places like Amazon, is a simple operation, if you already have an account with them, no problems.
If he already has an IPad, then maybe the basic kindle, but personally I would rather read from the IPad than the basic kindle. The basic Kindle does have one advantage over the IPad though, you can still read the screen in bright sunshine.
Thanks everyone and thanks for the links Stephen and Delboy, I think I will pay a visit to Tesco later so I can have a look at the various ones and then probably order from Amazon although if the prices are similar I might even buy from there as they have a very nice man in the electrical department who is very helpful.
Barney, good to hear they are ' idiot proof ' that will be just right for me as Stephen pointed out I want it for my husband so it won't be a problem when he's downloading it's just I want to put a few books on it for him.
As for downloading from the library it will all depend on what format they are using. A lot of the books at our library are in epub (Sony reader) format and you cannot download them to anything else - it is all to do with rights management so that you cannot keep them for ever.
Downloading from Amazon is a dream - select your book, pay for it and it will be on your Kindle before you can blink an eye.
Wouldnt be without my kindle. I've got more free books from Amazon that I have purchased.
You can't down load to the Kindle from UK libaries they only do epub books and these dont work on the Kindle unless you know Calibre and Apprentice Alf.
But if you're using an ipad no need to buy a kindle just download the kindle app for Mac and you are sorted.
