What smells?

Unread post by Onelife »

I stepped out of the door this morning fully expecting to fill my nostrils with that distinctive smell of spent fireworks. Not a smell that most would consider pleasant but it does I would imagine bring back many happy memories of childhood Bonfire parties.

One of the most unpleasant smells I have encountered was when, due to lack of hospital beds I spent a week on a burns ward....the smell of burnt decaying flesh is a smell that you never forget.

So what pleasant, not so pleasant or unusual smells have found there way up your nostrils? :)

Regards

OL

My wife loves the smell of tar, she opens her window in the car when we drive past roadworks that are spraying it.

Me I used to hate the smell of the local Gasworks when I used to walk past it on my way to work.

Awful smell.

We both love the smell of wild garlic :D + :D as we drive the country lanes here in smelly Darzet.

I, on the other hand, cannot stand the smell of nail varnish remover

The odours I find most unpleasant to me are raw fish( cooked fish too for that matter) and petrol, which is why I can't fill my car up and my husband has to do it.

Smells I do like include steam engines and pine trees.

There are not many smells that turn my stomach, but the worst I can remember was the smell of the pyres burning cattle & sheep during the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001.

I actually quite liked the smell of the gasworks - just as well, as there was a big one half a mile upwind of the seconadry school I attended.

I love the smell of the country side, freshly cut grass and especially manure. You can't beat a lung full of cow dung odour.

I don't particularly care for the smell of beef mince when the good lady is pre cooking it in the frying pan. And I hate the smell of a match being lit.

I dislike the smell of primroses, and of stale water in a vase.

I like the smell of Castrol R - and some baby toiletries.

I love the smell of coffee but hate the taste

I used to love the smell of freshly baking bread ... but after working directly above a bakery for several years it puts you off.

Definitely weird!!!

The smell of frying bacon is wonderful, as is bread baking. I love the smell of fresh mown hay and that earthy smell when it has just rained after a dry spell.

I don't like the smell of the kitchen, or indeed the house after we have been cooking fish.
I was taught to be cautious

Don't like the smell when a stranger passes wind, especially if it's in somewhere like a lift

Do like the smell of freshly cut grass, and some of the roses I have in my garden, as well as those from other gardens I may visit.

We have a spice factory near to us, sometimes the smells are fine, other times ........

OBF

Lorraine has just made me a bacon Sandwich, also love the smell of frying bacon. :D

I can empathise with that John, it is very nostalgic for me to smell those two and the smell of Fawley Oil refinery etc. However all three are laced with polycyclic hydrocarbons, which are at best carcinogenic.

I love the smell of seaweed on rocks.

So do dogs :)

I grew up in a fishing village and I remember the fishermen laying the Dulse out along the pier to dry in the sun before bagging it and selling it in the local shops ... I also remember seeing the odd dog coming along sniffing the seaweed and then cocking its leg over it before bagging

PS: Am I allowed to say 'cocking' on a Wednesday?

No, but you can get away with it on alternate Friday afternoons

I hate the smell of a tom cat's spray, gypsophyllia (sic?), lilies, vomit

I love the smell I thought was unique to old aircraft but now find that the same smell is in our museum, which is most definitely nothing to do with aviation, fresh-baked bread, fresh-brewed coffee, bacon frying (especially first thing in the morning on a campsite BBQ)

I do not like the smell of Kerosene, especially while I am sitting on an aircraft for 30 minutes while waiting for a "stand" to be vacated by another aircraft. It smells worse at 10.00pm as it was last night at Heathrow.
We had a lovely time in Madeira though.

Think yourself lucky you weren't living in my quarter at RAF Scampton - there was a Vulcan hardstanding at the end of the road and the jet exhaust came right down our street for quite some time between engines being started and the aircraft finally starting its taxy to the runway.

Glad you enjoyed Madeira - we're going there next October. Never been before!

Hi Alan,

It's a really great place - we have a habit of walking around and photographing ordinary everyday life - it's colourful and interesting, you'll have a wonderful time.

If your outing includes a visit to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, try and walk over to the market of Our Lady of Africa (rough translation), it's really bustling and full of colour and loads of interest.
