We have our ' Would you like to be upgraded ' preference set as ' NO '.

Have been shunted up two decks, from C to A Deck, on a Getaway deal and was offered a Suite on Adonia from a JF Balcony cabin on another Getaway deal ... we declined as they wanted mega bucks to do it.

An upgrade is being moved from the cabin you have booked to one of a higher grade & cost for no charge, if they charge you it's an "upsell" this is just a marketing ploy to sell you something, not necessarily a bad thing, just look at what you are being offered & assess if it's a good deal & what you want.

In the past we always chose our cabin carefully, deck C on Grand class if available, so we always requested do not upgrade thus we never were. Now we book an accessible cabin, normally a balcony, but on our next cruise we have booked an obstructed view cabin and of course we would be more than happy for an upgrade. But when I mentioned this during our booking process, direct with P&O, I was informed we might still be upgraded to a non accessible cabin. So we still had to opt for no upgrade. :(

We usually don't want an upgrade because we choose the position we want, like aft balcony on ships that have them & wouldn't want even a suite in a different place.

Only ever had one upgrade which was from an inside obstructed to a balcony - very much appreciated, but it was only for the weekend, so weren't able to take full advantage of it.

Of course the prime upgrade is to the 'Owners suite' (which apparently many ships have but it is not always included on the deck plans).
Quite a few years back someone on cruise critic got an upgrade from a basic outside cabin to the owners suite (I think it may have been a Carnival ship) ... they posted loads of pictures of it ... looked amazing

We were in an "owners suite" at Xmas, well not resident in it but invited to a party by those that were  absolutely beautiful, I would have loved to have got photo's of it ... but you don't, do you !!

I've also been in the Penthouse suites on Aurora ( again not as a resident  ) they are lovely although I think where they are positioned right under the bridge is not the best location.

That has given me a new idea for a thread ... on one of the Carnival ships I think they were overlooking the pool deck

I know this wasn't an upgrade, but on our first cruise with P&O back in 2009, a week before we were due to cruise, I received an e-mail asking if we would change from the balcony cabin we had booked to an inside cabin. The e-mail said that they would refund us all our money as compensation. Has this happened to anyone else? I refused because my husband gets claustrophobic.

Suitably attired with freshly polished boots (of thigh length black leather fame), and brandishing a bunch of nice fresh kippers there I am at the very front of the cheerleaders applauding the upgrade fairy and all the upgrade fairy friends - in grovelling thanks, gratitude and heaping multitudinous compliments and pleasantries upon those wonder and worthy folk.

We've had a couple of upgrades, it's been a blast!

WOW!

I wonder what had caused them to feel it necessary to offer such a deal? There must have been a major cock-up somewhere along the line. :o

Someone, somewhere got a deal-and-a-half.

Don't tell Wina this...but I've already contacted P&O and offered our balcony cabin on Azura should they need it. :shh: :shifty:

I'll happily have all my fare back in return for their cheapest cabin. :D

I've seen posts on the Princess Cruises & RCI boards on another website about this practice. Some of the offers have been outstanding, one was a full refund plus a free cruise in a top grade suite on a selection of dates

I'm not sure how I'd feel if I was offered that TBH as I'd want to go on the cruise I'd booked :?:

I think I might be persuaded. I don't know about Mrs. Q Bob though.

Like Debs, I have read several posts on other boards about American lines deliberately over booking and offering downgrades ... with many people very happy to take them.

There was however a recent story were several passengers had to have their holiday cancelled due to over booking.

We had a knock at our cabin door about an 3pm all unpacking done, and asked to move one deck up to an identical cabin, (we had been offered this cabin the night before sailing atan extra cost of £50.00) from an inside which we snapped up. unfortunatley there was confusion as the husband of the Lady who had booked the cabin had died, and she had cancelled him on the booking, but still wished to sail. they were so apologetic, we didn't care, but they sent flowers, champagne and the loyalty manager took my husband and myself to East to eat as an apology and us being so obliging...win, win.
