Re: What smells?
Can I take you back to when I was aged around 9 years old...a time when me and a few mates came across this enchanted wood. As kids we used to walk miles exploring different places and the day we came across this particular wood is something I still remember as if it was yesterday. I can still smell the carpets of bluebells so densely packed together that only the odd yellow primrose could be seen trying to pop its heads up as if to say “who goes there”.
I’m not so sure my friends appreciated the sight as much as I did but I can tell you the smell of the bluebells must have left a big impression with me as we later called our second house... “The Bluebells”
Moving 31 year on our beautiful daughter was born and 5 years after that I took my wife and daughter back to the very same wood that had enchanted me all those years ago.
Sitting on our mantle piece is a photo of me and my daughter standing in amongst the bluebells...happy memories and if I’m still around in a few more year time I’ll be hoping to take our Grandchildren there too.
Btw - I’m always happy to arrange Bluebell Walks for a small donation to the Onelife cruise fund.
Regards
OL

Re: What smells?
nostalgic smells:
Nasty: diesel - takes me back to guide camp where we were transported in the back of a removal van sitting on the luggage with the upper part of the tailgate open - no way it would be allowed these days.
strangely pleasant - lit candles - basic ones non scented - takes me back to the early 70s and all those power cuts - I would get back to college after a weekend at home and the first thing I would smell on entering the hostel was candles wafting from every room

Re: What smells?
Whilst working in a factory...one of my jobs was to degrease washing machine tubs. This process required the use of a substance called trichloroethylene which had an intoxicating smell that often left me feeling as high as kite.
Must dash its time for my fix

Re: What smells?
We used to use that in the RAF to degrease circuit boards - Trike, we called it. Sucks the skin oils out of your fingers like nobody's business. Trichlorotrifluouroethylene replaced it, as it was safer, but you are right about the smell.Onelife wrote:Whilst working in a factory...one of my jobs was to degrease washing machine tubs. Hi Alan,
Thankfully my exposure to Trike was very occasional and if I knew then what I know now you wouldn’t have got me within ten yards of the stuff.

Too right, Keith. We were told to slather ourselves with barrier cream before exposing ourselves to it but, of course, we had to stick our unprotected fingers in to see what happened!!

our fingertips went very white and wrinkly. It took a few hours for them to regain normalityMeg 50 wrote:Silver_Shiney wrote:Too right, Keith. I may be wrong but I’m sure I read that there was a chap who got so addicted to Trike that they found his body in the degreasing machine?

That reminds me of the story of the Scot who fell into a vat of whisky. His friends tried to rescue him but he bravely fought them off!
I've heard of a heavy-metal rocker who stuck his head inside the bass speaker cabinet...
