Re: Is cruising too cheap
My concern is that the very low Giveaway pricing is attracting people for whom conforming to cruise etiquette and behaviour is challenging.

I Googled this thinking others will have answered this question far better than I could. Unfortunately and embarrassingly there appears to be another type of cruising.

I remain highly sceptical and unconvinced that there is any difference ,other than that, in the eyes of cruise snobs

I certainly haven’t seen any evidence of that “yet” but I understand where you are coming from...I think 3/4* cruising has been out of the reach of lower income families since the days of steerage class. The lower cruise prices go then you are more likely to come across those who perhaps need to brush up on their etiquette...this is no fault of their own its all down to social circumstances.
At the end of the day most people (I would assume) choose their holiday knowing what standards they expect and if for any reason standards drop below that level then they will look for a better standard of cruise.
If my post comes across a little patronising then I apologise...It's not meant to do so.
Regards

My in laws have come across the sort of people Ray alludes to a couple of times on Oriana.
Keith, I do not find your comment patronising and quite agree with your sentiment

I quite agree with you Ray. When I first cruised on Canberra back in the '80's there was always a certain standard. This standard included dressing for dinner. No market stalls on the through passages, No males showing their tattoos and Persil white vests on the sun deck, well behaved kids, diners who knew which knife and fork to use. I had a discussion with "Em" a few months ago regarding second class diners in first class restaurants. I could go on.Ray Scully wrote:My concern is that the very low Giveaway pricing is attracting people for whom conforming to cruise etiquette and behaviour is challenging.

On smaller ships it is very difficult to avoid them but I guess it becomes easier on larger vessels.
I don't cruise with P&O anymore (I gave up in 2010). I travel with RCCL where if you wish you can eat the full dinner menu in your cabin, drink in a separate hostelry and breakfast in a separate restaurant.
I can hear you saying why doesn't he travel Grille on Cunard or something similar. That's because as a single traveller I can't afford it. I have to pay double as it is.
Yep perhaps I am a snob but if I can't afford to travel in surroundings that I am comfortable with - then I won't travel.

Howard, if you can do it, do it, mate. It's your money and your holiday. Enjoy it as YOU see fit.
