Hull has been named City of Culture for 2017. Gosh DK has worked hard since moving there.

Congratulations to the people of Hull, though as an inhabitant of Swansea, I have to say I am extremely disappointed as we also have the Welsh heritage.

Congratulations - and I hope that this award brings lots of happiness to the area. However, I have to agree with Gill, I thought that Swansea should have got the award - stunning coastline, and the heritage etc.

A friend of mine once accidentally typed Hell instead of Hull into his Sat Nav.

He still got there.

We know Beverley well enough but that, I think, is the closest we have ever been to Hull .... and Tandy Pandy-ish regarding Swansea.

Next year it will be Cerne Abbas

Dear Boris,

Spoken like somebody who is yet to visit the great Yorkshire city that is Kingston upon Hull. We have a decent heritage and we have a stunning coastline as well as a whole lot more. See you all in 2017! Come on you Hull!

Regards
Rob aka AOTH aka a proud citizen of Hull.

PS thanks Soiled Nightie, we couldn't have done it without you.

Hi Rob,

As it now seems that my plans for holidays in 2014 are completely up a merry gum tree without a paddle I am campaigning for a trip which takes in York and Harrogate (thoroughly enjoyed earlier this year) and onwards to Alnwick; and with the announcement which has come today I am now seriously planning on going through York and Harrogate, but widening my previous enjoyable experience by staying 'slightly elsewhere' when we are en route to Alnwick - and the obvious choice has to be Hull!

So, there you are - it is quite highly possible!

Hi Rob,

I think what I'll be looking for is a nice hotel, some local eateries, architecture and maybe some waterside scenery (and shops). I've decided on the hotel for Alnwick, but the rest is up for grabs.

Dear Non cultured Forumeers,

Please have a look at the film you will find on this link.

www.hullcc.gov.uk/2017hull

Apparently what tipped the decision in our favour was our "Hullness"

Regards
Rob aka AOTH (who appears in the film)

Looking back at the past Cities that have had this award, does it go to rundown areas that need regenerating?

if that the were criteria Chesterfield would win every day
given the state of the place, mind you it would need to be both a city and cultured, so naff all chance of that then
