given the state of the place, mind you it would need to be both a city and cultured, so naff all chance of that then
I mean you lot cant even build a straight spire

A straight forward question about an award replied to with an attack on a Town that you have admitted previously you now nothing about.

Brilliant.

Well done

Dear John,

In answer to your question "no" the title of City of Culture is not awarded to cities simply because they are run down. If that were the case I would suggest that the list would be very long and Hull would not necessarily be at the top. However, it is clear that the award is a useful tool in redeveloping a community.

I quote from Wikipedia here; " the aim of the initiative is to build on the success of Liverpool's year as European City of Culture in 2008 which had significant economic and social benefits for the area." Hull is the second UK City of Culture after Derry/Londonderry.

There is a lot going on in Hull and I personally think it's a great place to live but it has seen better days. Hopefully this award and the probable move to Hull of the Siemens off shore energy project will kick start an up turn in our economic livelihood.

Kind Regards

Luckily Hull will benefit enormously from this award and it will lead to a significant investment as a result of this accolade
Sadly some people just carry massive chips on their shoulder and cant post without a fairly obvious agenda, sad little people with the social skills of a bull in china shop
Any city would be delighted to be chosen

I believe the first UK city of culture, Derry/Londonderry, has and is putting on a great show and has set a high standard, but at a price and a lot of internal bickering between the committee and the council.

Instead of thinking of a place as being 'run down' what about viewing it as a place which is full of people who have loved the place so much that they have depleted their enthusiasm or energy or are maybe just 'resting' and considering new ideas?

If I see a place which is 'run down' I try and think of what has happened (loss of trade or people moving elsewhere for work, or war), that then obviously leads on to the fight which people quietly conduct to try and hang on to their memories, and 'their' place.

Although Hull may be embarking on some changes, I hope that the true local people won't have their memories and values squashed.

Em,

I agree completely, I was born in an area that has no industry left now at all and a very high unemployment level.

The area is a mess at the moment but the problem is that this is the only way that the new generation see and know it.

The last time I was in Hull we had a couple of hours to spend before boarding the ferry and I must say what a sad, forlorn spot it was. Hopefully this award will help to bring some investment in and revive its fortunes.
There are many other places around the country which have lost their industries and nothing has been invested to revive them and for that I blame successive governments of blue and red. If this country of ours is to improve we need to invest more widely throughout the country, upgrade the infrastructure and encourage business and commerce. All very well putting in a high speed link into London to cut 20 minutes. The money would be better spent upgrading road and rail links in other parts of the country which have for years been neglected.
Good luck to Hull!!
I was taught to be cautious

like many areas of the UK, where industry was once king, Hull needs investment, I hope this award brings this and puts Hull on the map , so to speak , for future investment and showcases the positive benefits of this city

ps it might also help push up house prices, so yours truly can top up his pension pot when I downsize

Sometimes it can cost money to downsize so best you move to Hartlepool when that time comes cos Derby could be well out of your price range by then.

A little poem specially for the Bat and his new home :lolno:

There was a young man called DK who moved house in the summer
The people of Hull thought oh dear this is a bit of a bummer
So Batty thought I'll prove them wrong they'll be glad they got me
I'll sell lots of who knows what :?: to help promote the city
And then one day his dream came true for Hull won the first prize
City of Culture it became - for many no surprise
So Batty now has much to do to help promote Hull's glory
With baited breath we watch and wait for the continuing story

What do you think Batty darling ;)

For years I have listened to people taking the mickey out of Hull, but we have our fair share of well known names which hail from the city even if some of them are imported. Here are some that I can think of...

William Wilberforce
Andrew Marvell
J Arthur Rank
Philip Larkin
John Prescott (sorry)
Alan Plater
John Godber
Sir Tom Courtnay

And from the entertainment world...

Maureen Lipman
Joe Longhtorne
The Housemartins
Fatboy Slim
David Whitfield
Mick Ronson
Everything But The Girl
Not forgetting Throbbing Gristle (No, I haven't either!)

And a special mention to Dark Night and AOTH of course.

And Me

I'm sure there are others - over to you Admiral

Is that acetic acid plant still operating on the way east to spurn? What about Goole docks, do they still get ships up the Humber? Have they still got that traditional trawler preserved in a Hull as a museum? Its ages since I was there, but I have happy memories of working both the North and South Banks of the Humber.

Dear Frank,

Yes, yes and yes.

And the pupils at the Trinity House School still wear their traditional Midshipmen uniforms.
