Update ...I have just done a test and you have spelt the name wrong, or so I believe
So ...
Cog / Private Message / Inbox and then select the PM you wish to respond to.
Scroll down a little to read the message and just above the Avatar of the PM's sender is a link that is entitled ' Reply to Message ' .... click on it and then compose the reple and hit ' Submit '.

Thanks for the replies, have figured out the problem, it was me
I assumed the small box above the message box was for a title of the message ( its were you can add a members name), hence the user does not exist
