Coffee etiquette

Unread post by anneed »

Further to 'Supermarket etiquette' what bugs me is the time it takes to get a simple coffee now that all these fancy options are available. How much easier it was in the old days when the only choices were a cup of black or white. I think there should be an express queue for people like me who just want a simple filter coffee and leave the mocho, chocco, skinny latte and cappuccino types to wait elsewhere.

Oh it's fun to moan!

Hence we won't see you in Cafe Vivo on J406. Just after we've stolen two pieces of jigsaw!

Oh no!

I like a nice strong latte, every morning at 11.00.

Cafe Vivo on Arcadia does a nice one.

I pick up a takeaway latte at 8.00 a.m. and take it in for breakfast as the restaurant coffee tastes so bitter first thing in the morning, also kills the red wine aftertaste.

Can somebody please explain what the difference is in all of these different coffees. To me there are two coffees - black or white, end of.

I normally drink my coffee black.

When I venture into a coffee shop I get confused at the names of the drinks they rattle off and when they say 1 or 2 shots I am totally lost.

I can now add Barista to my list of jobs (helped a friend who runs a coffee shop for 18 months). Never worked so hard in my life and have never met such a variety of people, from the very friendly to the rudest and most miserable !.
You'd be amazed what there is to learn about proper espresso based drinks and it's really interesting, so many different types, new ones appearing all the time. Where I was kept all the coffee beans on display to grind to order which people could chose from, I think around 18 types but just used riposo for the everyday espresso and a daily special for filter.
Wasn't a quick takeaway place but a very sociable community coffee shop.
I guess if you do want a basic filter you're better off in a non chain place like this, otherwise take a flask !.
Funny though, I stopped drinking tea and coffee 6 years ago but the smell of the beans when I worked there was amazing and very tempting !.

We are mainly tea drinkers but like the occasional coffee but do not know all the different types and names. In La Spezia some years ago I needed to use the ladies room so OH said he would sit outside the cafe and order a drink. He ordered an espresso not realising what it was like - it was just a name he had heard and it seemed popular with the locals. The toilet had a folding door and I somehow jammed the lock - it took me ages to get out and when I eventually yanked the door back I have a horrible feeling that I broke the lock. Hot and bothered I rushed out to where my husband was sitting and said 'Drink up, we are leaving.' He was still sat there with this thick tar like substance in front of him in a small cup thinking that the waiter was going to bring out hot water to turn it into a decent coffee. Luckily, he had paid so we upped and left so he never got to try out an espresso but I don't think he missed much - it looked revolting.

Espresso tastes lovely if you like strong coffee. Sometimes I drink it with a little bit of brown sugar in but I love it. The only downside is that it's only served in a tiny cup (no more than an egg cup) so you really need a double shot at least.

I always ask for a double espresso. A single only just wets the lips.

The caffeine certainly wakes you up. I once made myself a mugful of espresso as I enjoy it so much - didn't sleep a wink all night!! Lesson learnt.

I normally spend so long looking at the yummy cakes in these sort of places that by the time I get asked I forget what I wanted, panic and ask for a latte...don't even like them that much. If you think there is too much choice here, try America. We got coffee in a petrol station, even there there was half a dozen types of coffee and half a dozen more types or flavours of milk.

What I don't like about some of the coffee places - Costa etc. - is that they use such thick, large cups. I had a coffee in one place recently, was asked if I wanted regular or large. I chose regular. When it came it was huge! I dread to think how big a large one would have been! I really like the cups that they use in XVII on Azura and, I think, in Cafe Jardin on Oceana. They are Villeroy and Boch and beautifully thin so you can really taste the coffee! I know, I'm very fussy. I have been known to take my own cup and saucer to use in the cabin when sailing from Southampton as I don't like the thick mugs they seem to use nowadays!

They are big, heavy mugs with tiny handles so unless you have a grip like a vice you need two hands to drink from them. I'm not keen on them either Carole. Not keen on their coffee either which is a bit tasteless to me, even with an extra shot. Some of the independent shops do a better coffee, and cheaper, in cups you can actually pick up. Not a fan of Costa, Starbucks & Co.

The best latte I drink, is at home and made with Carte Noir decaff., nice and strong. We have used Costa, but never Starbucks. Costa varies with which outlet you use as far as we are concerned.
