It was probably the cry of "take that, Sweep" that did it !

As our eyes met across the theatre bar and we drowned in each other's gaze he said huskily........................"Can I have half a Carlsberg please?"

Not very romantic but we were engaged three weeks later!

I met my OH at a bus stop when I was bit tipsy and at first I thought she was someone else. My chat up line was "I suppose I'll have to pay your fare now!"

That was in 1964 and I'm still paying! :D

I asked my OH if she wanted to go out for the evening, she replied that she did but instead of going out for a drink, could we go and look for her car that had been stolen the night before.in fact,we did find the car with the help of the local constabulary so you could say that we found each other as well as finding the car.what a chat up line...I'll go out if you help find my car,I'll bet its a first!

I was home on leave for the first time for over a year. It was a struggle to meet girls when working on cargo ships, but at Christamas 1961 I had just bumped into a girl who I had made a note of a couple of years earlier, and I was making some significant progress. We were due to go to a party, when I met her in Leighton Buzzard High Street and she informed me that her Dad had forbidden her to go (He chnged his mind about me later but too late). I was standing with a group of friends when a girl ran by (I later discovered that she used to run everywhere), my friends seemed to know her because they shouted out "Hallo Sue". For some unknown reason ( who says there's no such thing as fate?) I shouted after her, "Hallo Sue". She stopped and came back, and we were introduced. I said "Would you like to come to a party tonight?" She said "Yes" and the rest is 52 years of history. I never say it was love at first sight on my part, rather that I grew into it over the next few months. Firstly because Sue's family were so lovely and very kind to me, secondly because she was and still is fun, and sparky, and we laugh a lot together.

My chat up lines were almost non existent.

Lovely to read all these posts - some of you men are really romantic and to hear of long marriages is heartwarming. I met my husband at work - he was a trainee civil engineer and I was a shorthand typist in the department - I must admit I thought he was a good catch and I think the mini skirt did it for him - I wore them really short - how could he resist ;) I don't honestly remember any of his chat up lines but I remember our first kiss in the back row of the cinema on our first date. Anyone remember those double seats - no arms getting in the way :lolno: We were married for 38 years and the year he died we had returned to Jersey - the first time since our honeymoon. I am a big believer in fate and looking back so glad we made that return trip. Lovely memories :D

For me it has been Cowes - Leighton Buzzard - Poole/Bournemouth/Poole.

Nice little town Leighton Buzzard. Used to have a lovely cricket ground with the river Ousel running along one side, excellent batting strip in those days. Nice market cross, and a quaint old fire station with a chiming clock which is slightly flat, the thought of which used to make me homesick when I was in some grotty foreign ports (Punta Cardon for instance). Sue and I lived there for 18 years without ever meeting until 23rd December 1961. We moved to Poole to give me some ships to look at, after I gave up the sea to get married. Ce' la vie.

Frank, given Jo's opening comments in this thread, it was at Leighton Buzzard (well, actually RAF Stanbridge, opposite the old Liptons factory) where those immortal words about the cheque book were uttered. LB was also famous for the Barron Knights, and Duke Dumond was a regular in the Red(?) Lion pub at the bottom of the high street next to the church.

I seem to recall going to Cowes as a small child, but you'll be relieved to know we have nowhere else in common

I was friendly with Peter Langford's ( P'nut in the Barron Knights) brother Dave, and my brother was friendly with Pete, still is I believe. Dave was a good sportsman. Was RAF Stanbridge a telecomms station? We had a fast bowler from there; Martin Ashenden. He was seriously quick. The beer in those days was real ale, Aylesbury brewery, and Benskins; all gone now. Phipps Northampton was dishwater, but the brewery is still going producing foreign branded lagers. Loads of pubs in LB;

I used to go in the Red Lion that was in Market Square, and the Black Lion in the High Street. We may have met at some stage who knows.

Sorry, I've drifted off topic. Again!

I knew there was a Red and a Black Lion, could never remember which one was where! The Black - wasn't that near the top, on the same side as the Red near the Wimpey, with a covered passageway next-door leading to a car park?

The place was also home to Nigel Olney, one of the UK's first heart transplant patients. He was the station chiropodist and lent me a gold chain from which to hang my grandfather's pocket watch on my wedding. Sadly, he died shortly afterwards.

Yes, Stanbridge was the communications centre. When I first arrived there in December 1976, I was introduced to the girl I'd be working with, whose eyes lit up with the cry "ah, fresh meat!". How's that for a chat-up line?

Sue tells me I'm wrong about the pubs (and I thought she was an innocent girl! )

Girls never fail to surprise me with their chat up lines. I must tell you the story about how Frank Manning came into being (as my name) some day. It involved three drunk Glaswegian "ladies", and a Scouse lady in a bar near Wigan, but it is nowhere near as bad as that sounds. Some on here already know the story.

My brother was away working in a dock town and in the evening he decided to go out for a drink. He just popped in to a pub around the corner from the B&B he was staying in and was sat in the corner with his pint quietly minding his own business.
He was approached by a 'lady'. He says she was enormous, with big biceps and hands like shovels. In a deep, gruff voice she asked him, 'Have you got the time?' He says he has never been so terrified in his life.
He squeaked, 'Ten past nine', finished his drink and beat a swift exit.
I was taught to be cautious

Our son was in Lisbon, due to be made redundant from Blue Star Line, and he spotted a beautiful SAA Air Stewardess sitting with the aircrew in a bar. He bought a rose, and took it across to her in his teeth before presenting it to her, the flight captain said you are a very brave boy. It must have acheved something because he did get an address for her. Within three months he was flying out to Capetown to join Safmarine.

More nerve than his Dad I can tell you.

Not sure if this belongs here or has been posted before, but it tickled me.

An aussie walks into a local bar and starts chatting up a lass. They are getting on well, however she notices he keeps glancing at his watch.

"Why do you keep looking your watch" she asks.

"Well you see, it's telepathic and lets me know what's happening around me" he replies.

She responds " that's just silly, not possible, give me an example".

He has a look at his watch and says " right now it's telling me you're not wearing any panties ".

" Well it's rubbish and absolutely wrong, I am wearing panties " she replies.

He gives his watch a tap and says "bloody thing's an hour fast"!

No offence meant.
