bad foods that are so good

Unread post by Dark Knight »

I do like food shopping, filling the trolley will all sorts of tasty treats
but I do have a habbit of buying unhealthy things as guilty pleasures
two of these are Gold Top Jersey milk with 5% and blue top whole milk with nearly 4% fat, both of which i drink by the pint

what is you guilty food pleasure

Achilles heel - cheese, ice cream and chocolate; but I've learned to ration these.

One thing you really can't beat in the UK - fabulous porky pies and wonderful sausage rolls (and don't please get me started on proper pasties!).

Just off to content myself with a simply black coffee then!

Hi Em,

I haven’t tasted a decent UK pork pie in ages...Which would you recommend?

I think that the ones we sometimes have are 'hand raised' ones from a farm shop.

For me it's salt and vinegar crisps and milk chocolate digestive biscuits, I hardly ever buy them because they are too tempting!

Oh dear. Where to begin?

Ice cream, I love it; vanilla/cornish cream and chocolate combined if possible and second helpings.

Raju had me worked out as a icecreamaholic within two days last time we were on Aurora. Result? I came home with cholesterol over 7, and now have to take Atovastatin.

Hi Em,

I’ve tried the ones from our local farm shop just down the road but have always been disappointed. Whatever happened to those pork pies which had all that lovely jelly (gelatine) inside them? The closest I’ve got to anything that resemble pork pies of yesteryear are a brand called “Dickinson’s” but even they taste like cardboard compared to the ones that were produced when I was a kid.

Regards

Keith

Stephen, I’ve tried Melton Mowbray but even they come up a little short where Jelly is concerned..I do however like the taste of them.

I love chocolate but ration myself. Another is nuts I love them and generally only have them at Christmas because they are so fattening. I've just seen an article recently however which says nuts are really GOOD for you and can even prevent cancer. So you and I can indulge ourselves ad infinitum and we are actually eating healthily. How good is that.

Now I could be shooting myself in the foot with this daft question - but is the jelly missing from pork pies because of variant cjd?

Patum Peperium.... now that brings back memories....

For me, it's chocolate and red wine.

Also, can't eat too much lamb or beef.

I bet you can still get a good pork pie complete with gelatine. Probably not in a Supermarket though. Do Duchy do any? The Duchy sausages take a bit of beating; but I am even rationed on those.

McVities Plain Chocolate Digestives eaten accompanied by a glass of cold semi skimmed milk, if I start I can not stop. We dont even walk down the biscuit aisle in Waitrose these days.

All together "Aaaaah, poor old Frank, living on his diet of Ryvita and water".

Hi Em,

I've just found this....

“You just take a couple of sheets of leaf gelatine and soak them in cold water for about five minutes and then they'll become lovely and soft. Just squeeze out any of that excess water. And then stir into some very hot stock. Now make sure you use a good quality stock, it can be chicken, vegetable or beef. And then just stir it in. In here I've also got a tablespoon of chopped parsley. This will add a nice bit of colour and flavour to the finished dish. Stir round until it's completely dissolved and that's ready to pour into the pie”

....I don’t think it can be anything to do with CJD, especially if you eat the meats that produce the stock?

I’m going to get my Pork pie tin out again and have another go...my last one tasted great but the jelly was a disaster.

Regards

Keith
