Hi Janis, if we ever find ourselves on the same cruise can I be in your quiz team? My knowledge of horse racing is pretty extensive and I’ll be more than happy fetching the drinks while you’re answering everything else
What team name shall we call ourselves?

Now I come from a family with connections to horse racing - my grandfather was a bookies runner when it was illegal to bet and as a child I always wanted to play with the "clock" - couldn't understand why there was a problem
My grandmother used to take the clock and the money to the bookie under the deception of taking her granddaughter (me) out for a ride on the bus
So I think we should call ourselves the "Runners" - what do you think?

Re: Wednesday
Good morning Janis,
It may interest you to know that I was a bookies runner, unfortunately the only thing I carried in my bag was a soggy jam sandwich which my mother had prepared for the following days racing with my uncle who was the local bookie.
The “Clock” bags had just about had their day when I started going to race meetings which is just as well because I heard some not so nice stories about people who tampered with Clock bags.
Now it’s funny you should come up with the name “Runners” because our Tote sport Ten to follow syndicate just happens to be called the “Midnight Runners” Unfortunately most of our selections haven’t got out of a canter yet so we are trailing way behind the leaders.
I will look forward to when the “Runners” can make their first public appearance
Regards
Keefy

Re: Wednesday
As Keefy knows I enjoy a good day at the races so can I join your 'runners'
On another forum someone has started a Saturday bet thread .. £10 wager on any of the C4 meetings which are televised, obviously just for fun and no winnings at the end of the day, I've only managed one winner so far and won £90 in cyber money
Maybe something we could think about doing in the New Year

Hi Jo course you can be one of the Runners. My mother (91 next month) is an avid racing fan - she watches all the racing on Channel 4 - gets annoyed if disturbed during a race! She doesn't bet but studies form - have to get some tips from her. I've only been to a race meeting once but loved it.Dancing Queen wrote:As Keefy knows I enjoy a good day at the races so can I join your 'runners'![]()

We'll have to get Keefy to organise things.

Re: Wednesday
Jan, Your post took me back many many years
My Grandparents ran a small off license in the days when beer was in barrels. Every Saturday men would come with their jugs ready to buy their beer. First of all they would go through to the living room and my sister and I would be ushered out of the room. One day I went back in for something I had forgotten and on the table there was lots of pieces of paper and a pile of sixpence pieces.
It was many years later I realised that illegal betting had been taking place.
I also enjoy a day at the races but form doesn't come in to when I have a bet. I always go for one with a quirky name . If I am at home watching it on TV I will occasionally have a bet on one that looks extra special .
Needless to say I don't ever win a fortune.
