Laphroaig Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Dear Forumeers,
Unlike my father Captain AOTH, I'm not a great whisky drinker. If ever we are stuck for ideas for a birthday or Christmas present for the Captain Admiral we can always fall back on a bottle of malt and he is more than happy. On the other hand I can't say I'm incredibly fussed....until that is tonight when I had one of those "moments".
Some of you may recall that I reached the grand old age of 50 in May. Ten years previously, by strange coincidence, I reached the grand not so old age of 40. Somebody, and sadly I cannot remember who, bought me a litre bottle of 10 years old Laphroaig. I must admit to hating the stuff initially and for a good while it lay forgotten in the drinks cupboard coming out at Christmas's only to be ignored in favour of the rather smoother Glenfiddich and Glenmorangie. Even the Captain Admiral steered clear of it...unlike that jetty in Greece eh Pops?!?
Well over the last year or so I have been taking the odd nip or two now and again and tonight I realised that I had actually come to enjoy it. Sadly with this realisation has come the end of the bottle. Perhaps Father Christmas is looking in on the "Friendly Forum" this evening and will come to the rescue.
Good evening.
Regards
Rob aka AOTH

I find Islay generally too peaty, but it's probably like you have found, in that as you try it more you get to appreciate it more.

Invited to a wee Whisky promotion this very day at our posh Superjolly
My set task was to sample and record my preference
My preference was for a modest priced supermarket blended scotch own brand
This tells a lot about the Giant
A bleedy rural Darzet 'Spoons loving cheap-scape
Be happy

Re: Laphroaig Single Malt Scotch Whisky
I'm not keen on some of the more fiery whiskies and tend to go for smooth. My favourite is Glengoyne which comes from a place called Dumgoyne just north of Glasgow,I discovered when walking the West Highland Way. The water comes from limestone so it is not so peaty so it's a very smooth whisky indeed.
If I can't get that I am very happy to settle for a Jamieson's which runs it a very close second.

Yet to find one that I can drink, let alone enjoy. It gives me heartburn. Now, a nice vintage port, a fine wine or a good pint of bitter......................

Damn, I missed it Graham.
No doubt though I shall be partaking in a dram or three round at ma and pa's on Sunday morning. We only go round for a coffee, but it's not long before the whiskey makes an appearance around 11.30.........often earlier
Well, it would be rude not to wouldn't it.

Laphroiag is Paul's favourite. One year when I bought him a bottle they were doing a promotion where for £1 you could purchase 1 square foot of land on Islayso I think he's now a squire

Keith doesn't like a peaty whisky. His favourite at the moment Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban. Of course no water or ice in sight.

Having sailed with an all Scots crew and carried whiskey in the cargo out of Glasgow for two years in my mispent youth I'm afraid I have no stomach for it anymore. Gordons gin with 50/50 tonic, ice and lemon for me. Or if only I could get it these days, a nice pint of mild.

My Scottish FIL didn't like the peaty whiskies. He and my husband always enjoyed a glass of Lagavulin (my OH's favourite) and a Glenfiddich, or Glenmorangie (my FIL's favourites). I don't like whiskey at all.

Plenty of milds still available oop in the north, Frank.Frank Manning wrote:Having sailed with an all Scots crew and carried whiskey in the cargo out of Glasgow for two years in my mispent youth I'm afraid I have no stomach for it anymore. Timothy Taylor do a particularly nice light mild called Golden Best. They also do a dark mild, but it's their only beer I've yet to try.

At the risk of appearing pedantic, whisky is made only in Scotland. Anything else is whiskey. I suspect neither includes the hooch sold in Japan a few years ago that was made "with genuine Scotch grapes"!

I was lucky enough with some others to invest in a cask of the aforesaid nectar 10 years ago. 2014 sees the (hopefully) bottling, so looking forward to that as quite a few bottles wend their way to me, Hic

Frank, it would be a pleasure to buy such a gentleman a drink. When it's your round I'll be ordering a pint of malt though...Frank Manning wrote:Well when I come up to 'Uddersfield (My SIL's Hometown...well Holmfirth actually, but close enough), you can buy me a pint of dark mild Romig, I shall enjoy it all the more if a Yorkshireman is paying!Romig1 wrote:Plenty of milds still available oop in the north, Frank.Frank Manning wrote:Having sailed with an all Scots crew and carried whiskey in the cargo out of Glasgow for two years in my mispent youth I'm afraid I have no stomach for it anymore. I looked up their web site, but they dont deliver mild. I'll just have to journey to the frozen North one day (Above Watford; north of the gumption line!).

Captain AOTH used to enjoy a pint of mild Frank though I remember the aroma of the after effects used to linger around the family home the next morning.Frank Manning wrote:Having sailed with an all Scots crew and carried whiskey in the cargo out of Glasgow for two years in my mispent youth I'm afraid I have no stomach for it anymore. There's no answer to that!!
I have discovered that the nearest pub to me selling mild is 35 miles away in wildest Dorset Beaminster.
