New Years Eve plans

Unread post by Kendhni »

So what has everybody got lined up?

For a change we are headed out with friends to a bash at a nearby hotel, champagne reception (yuch), 5 course meal, decent group, piper and then disco.

Anyway whatever you do have a very Happy New Year

I don't much like NYE so we are out for a lengthy lunch with four friends, followed by an evening in front of the TV with some canapés and bubbly. And Graham Norton on the box!

I'm a bit of a misery around Christmas and New Year for personal reasons - my late husband and I always went away for New Year - usually to London to see a show and have a special meal so I do have lots of fabulous memories. Friends ask me out but I'd rather stay in - have a drink and nibbles and watch the tv probably Graham Norton - whatever you are doing have a great time xxx

Firstly to wish all Forum members a very happy and prosperous 2014.

We will be spending New Years Eve as we always do with our immediate family. My Son and his wife will be joining us at our daughters home, together with our 3 Grandchildren, we will play a few board games, send out for a Chinese takeaway, have a few drinks (not champagne as none of us like it) and see the New Year in by watching the fireworks display at midnight from London on the TV.

Tomorrow New Year's Day, we will all meet up again at our daughters, for a roast dinner the same as we do on Christmas Day, although instead of a Turkey we will probably have Roast Chicken, which Lorraine cooks and we take it with us. Our daughter cooking and preparing the rest of the meal, good job we all live within 10 minutes of one another. Our Son and Daughter will probably be taking the 4 dogs (2 Alsatians and 2 Labradoodles) to the beach, early in the morning for a run, as they did on Christmas and Boxing Day, which we also all spent together.

Just hope I am feeling well enough to face it all, as for the past two days have not been too well, stomach and chest pains yet again, although thankfully they have eased this morning.

I'm sure we are all sorry to hear of your ailment, Delboy, and wish you a full a speedy recovery.

We're not great fans of the New Year celebrations. It's just another day tomorrow. I don't like being expected to stay up just to see the calendar change - not that I've got anything against staying up into the small hours, if I'm having a drink or otherwise socialising with family and friends, it's no problem to wind up after midnight, it's just the whole "it's New Year's Eve, you have to stay up" thing that gets my goat. I think tonight we're all planning on being in bed normal time.

At least there's no more Andy Stewart and The White Heather Club...

Tomorrow, the Lady C is preparing roast beef, and Welshie and her boyfriend are joining us before she goes off to work. The Christmas decorations will be packed away and the house will return to normal (thank goodness!).

Notwithstanding my "bah humbug" attitude to tonight, I wish everyone a happy, healthy, prosperous and blessed 2014. Thank you for your company and friendship during 2013.
Alan

In a way, I am with you SS. I dont find much about New Year to float my boat, but it is a time for reflection and I am often moved by the words of George VI's broadcast in 1940 when he quoted Minnie Haskins poem 'The Gate of the Year'

I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year,
Give me a light, that I may tread safely into the unknown,
and he replied, Go out into the darkeness, and put your hand into the Hand of God
That shall be better than a light, and safer than a known way.

So a happy new year to all the friends on here whom Sue and I have met, and to those we still hope to meet. Wishing you peace, good health, and happiness in 2014.

Nothing doing here.

Probably doze off in front off the box and get woken up by some inconsiderate ba*tards fireworks in the early hours.

A new year and ground hog starts over again.

Hi Ken,

We started our New Year’s Eve celebrations last night with a visit to the Royal Shakespeare theatre’s production of “Peter Pan and Wendy”. Unfortunately we’d left it little late booking seats so found ourselves seated here there and everywhere. Well, that was until I noticed three unoccupied seats right in front of me, so after a juggler around at the interval we all enjoyed the second half seated together. Having had a very enjoyable evening I then decided to treat my wife and daughter to a slap up meal at McDonalds.

Tonight we’ll be joining friends from around the village for a bash at one of the biggest house in the village (two houses joined together actually) for our annually get together. I’ve only missed one of them in the last ten years.

New Year’s Day will start with a walk round the local park with the mutt....then on our return my wife will rush around preparing my well earned breakfast.

As for the rest of the day I’ll be watching the racing from Cheltenham while my wife washes up from breakfast....but as always, please don’t tell my wife I’ve said that... Squeak squeak!

Here’s wishing you and yours and indeed all furommers a very happy 2014

Regards

Keith

We will be having a double celebration as usual, as New Year's Day is my husbands birthday. New Year's Eve we are going to a dinner /dance with our daughter and son in law, a nice meal, a band and disco, so some dancing and drinking to see in the new year. Then after the stroke of midnight we will celebrate hubby's birthday as he was born at 20 past 12 on New Year's Day, the first new year baby of that year ( 1952) happy new year to everyone whatever you are doing.

We always spend New Year's Eve with friends - the husband of the couple was my husband's best man, quite a few years ago now! For many years they always came to us but recently we have been going to them. The wife is a fantastic cook - so is her husband come to that - there's always a starter, hot fish course, main course etc. I'm afraid these days I can't face doing all that - the wife is a good deal younger than me - well that's my excuse. It's always a Black Tie do which, for us, makes it just that much more special. We will be staying the night so that takes care of the driving - although there seems to be a police check out now on people the following morning.

Tomorrow we will eventually call in on our younger daughter who lives fairly near our friends, just for a cup of coffee probably, and not too early! Our friends don't have a television - amazing isn't it - so we don't see the London celebrations, which for the past few years have been really good. Might have a look at them on iPlayer tomorrow.

Time was, in my youth - in the 70s - I went with a boyfriend to Trafalgar Square on New Year's Eve - it was freezing. No I didn't go for a dip in one of the fountains. I do remember sitting in my car in the Strand in a long queue trying to get out of London once the celebrations were all over.

A Happy New Year to everyone.

Carole

Do not usually do anything, but this year am in Painscastle, just over the Welsh border staying with my brother and his wife and my stepfather is joining us. Off to the village pub (just 3 mins walk away) for a meal and listen to the local band. Will be all locals so should be a good night.

Happy New Year one and all

Just another day, for me
what time we go to bed ,will also depend on how many stupid, inconsiderate cretins set off fireworks, which annoy me and frighten the dogs

Humbuggery to all of it, it is just a money making fest, nothing more

New Years Eve on a cruise is an amazing night.
Otherwise it is a quiet time at home.

Tonight I will be working until 10.00pm then home to shower ready to watch TV and the celebrations taking place around the world.

I have 1 New Years Resolution which I try to follow every year.

It is to enjoy every minute of every day. Treasure the people who share it with you as tomorrow it will be gone and will be sitting in your memory box

Best wishes Everyone for 2014.

Nothing much for us, just a bottle of champagne between us. May I take this opportunity to wish all you forumeers a Happy and Prosperous new Year!

Delboy, without wishing to worry you too much, my 'small' heart attack had symptoms very similar to indigestion. I had a tight, gripping feeling right below the centre of the sternum which every now and then would fade away completely for a few seconds before returning. It was my blood pressure reading that first got me concerned, 210/95, so I took an aspirin and dialled 999. It was only the blood test at the hospital that provided a final confirmation but one angiogram, a quad bypass, three cruises and 17 months later and I'm still here. All the best, mate.

Wina and I are off to the local cricket club at which we are members.

8pm start, then a supper and disco for £6 a ticket...should be a good night as we have made some good friends there over the past 12 months or so.

Taxi booked several days ago 8pm out and 1am back..... standard rate on the meter too, .... just hope it turns up, cos they made a mess of the booking and turned up at 8pm on Christmas eve

Thanks for that, have been rushed into Hospital twice in the past due to excruciating chest pains, and my family's heart history (dad died of heart attack, one brother has had 4 way by pass, other brothers has a pacemaker ).

However following just about every test you can have for the heart and also the stomach, the hospital came to the conclusion it was not cardiac, but gastric related(GERD). Had test with tube into stomach and thankfully no ulcers. However I am on medication which I have to take before each meal and watch what I eat. They say very hard to tell the difference from the pain you get when having a heart attack and that created by GERD.
This still does not stop me from time to time, experiencing what I can only describe as starting out as a nervous tension in the stomach, followed by chest pains, although nowhere near as bad as when I was rushed into hospital. They nearly always happen late at night, cannot lay down or sleep with them, normally last 2/3 hours, then clear until the next time. However the last lot started Monday night, lasted all Monday night, and all day yesterday, thankfully got some sleep last night, but stomach is still a little upset.

Thanks again.

DELBOY!! Has anyone checked you for a gall stone? That sounds very much like what Sue had a few years ago which turned out to be a large nasty spiky gallstone.

For the first time in 30 plus years of marriage we are staying in tonight. We were supposed to be going to our very good friends for a party but this has been cancelled due to ill health. We have had other offers but cannot get into the mood now. We are having a nice meal, and watch some TV. Hopefully we will stay up to see the New Year in.

Hope you all gave a great time.

Thanks for that, will keep it in mind, but would have thought it would have shown up when I had the scans, x-ray's and ultrasound, also an endoscopy biopsy.

I am no doctor Del, but I remember the registrar telling us that sometimes the gallstones are small but lots of gravelly ones. Worth mentioning, because with Sue the smallest amount of fat in her diet set the pain off. It was fixed with keyhole surgery in a day visit.
