We have the same old argument every year - I say 5th January but SWMBO says it is the 6th January.

We lost a point in the Christmas quiz for saying the 6th. I later Googled it and found the actual date of 12th Night is open to debate:

By the way we also lost a point on Santa's reindeer which is my speciality. The quiz master claimed Rudolph was one of them - NO! It's Donner, Blitzen, Dancer, Prancer, Dasher, Cupid, Comet and Vixen.

We decided to take the tree/decs down on 1st Jan so that I could then give the lounge a good clean, the stuff hasn't gone back in the loft until today though ... used to take it down on the 5th but haven't done that for a number of years now

Stuff won't be coming back out of the loft for 2 years as we'll be on Aurora for Xmas & New Year, first time we've been on Aurora & first time we've been away for Xmas

There were only two reindeer: Rudolph and Olive.

12th night for us is New Year's Day - that's when all the Christmas decorations are put away.

If there are "12 days" of Christmas, the first being 25 December, then the 12th day is, indeed, 5 January.

To make things even more confusing I've hear two conflicting superstitions concerning Christmas decorations and 12th night.

One is that it is unlucky to have them up after 12th night.

The other that it is unlucky to take them down before the same deadline.

I guess that leaves you a nanosecond at midnight on whichever night it is to get them down.

All my decs and cards have gone except one small christmas tree and one of those candle things which is in an upstairs window. They will go away on Monday.

I'm back at home, all unpacked, and so in the morning straight after breakfast the greetings cards will be disposed of, and the trimmings will be removed from the tree and put back in the plastic box/tub thing - and then we might get it hidden away in the loft again, or it might wait a day or two. For us, 12th night is the time when we dismantle everything and pack it all away, but not necessarily the date when we do the loft lark.

I have always understood it corresponds with epiphany which is the 6th January, always remember it because it is the same day as our daughters birthday.

Ours all went New Year's Day. The tree still sits outside though waiting to be planted.

In this household Lorraine always insists its the 5th, the first day/ night being the 25th Dec, they all have to be down before Epithany on the 6th.
Hence I have the job of taking our decks and lights, inside/outside down today.
What always makes me laugh, about concerns from some, whether it's the 5th or the 6th they come down, nobody bothers about which day they go up.

Mine are heading back into the loft this afternoon. Since I suffer quite a bit from S.A.D. I am looking at the sunrise and sunset times almost daily in January, much to Sue's amusement.

Ours are now all up in the loft for another year, plus our daughter has also brought hers round to store in our loft.

She had another room built into her loft, which reduced the amount of her loft storage space.

The gales over here sorted out our outside lights. The ones on the tree bit the dust about a week ago and poor Rudolph simply became completely waterlogged. I'm not sure if he will ever recover.

Hi emjay,

I think we’ve got off pretty lightly here in the Midlands... having said that the wind has started to pick up considerably this past couple of hours.

I’ve heard our little islands have taken a real battering this past couple of weeks but please don’t worry too much about Rudolph as he’ll have plenty of time to recover given that he’s out of work for the next twelve months...poor Rudolph!!.

Btw...if he does start to go downhill perhaps a wooden spoon might help you get the medicine down...let me know if you'll be needing one
