We are also fans of the Archers and Ambridge. I was born and brought up in the Worcestershire village where the black and white pub, The Old Bull, is the one used on all the photos of The Bull at Ambridge. Our village used to host some Archers events. I particularly remember watching Walter Gabriel driving a steam engine outside The Old Bull way back in the 1960s. Sad that we have now lost Jack Woolley. There is also going to be a new voice for Tony Archer, as Colin Skipp is leaving the programme. Things are changing down in dear old Ambridge.
We have listened to The Archers each evening for years - far more than I care to remember! We tend to listen while having supper and friends and family know that it isn't a good time to phone! We do sometimes moan at the scriptwriters, particularly at the moment. I knew that the actor who played Jack Woolley died sometime ago so this was going to happen sometime. I thought it was particularly well acted, especially by June Spencer (Peggy) who, I believe, is in her late 80s.
Of course it's "real"! I have a genuine Archers tie and a letter from Godfrey Baseley which was sent to my late father for helping when there was a big Archers event in our village. My husband now proudly wears the tie on special occasions. It is a good talking point at dinner when we are on cruises.
Sad to lose Jack, and sadder to lose Peter Gadd (stage name Arnold Peters) who played him. I was lucky enough to know Peter for many years and he was a true gentleman.
