Big Garden Bird Watch

Did anyone do the RSPB Bird Watch this week end.

I did, and a lot of the usual birds stayed away!!!! I saw Blackbird, Magpie, Robin, Jackdaw, Dunnock and Pidgeon. Not a bad haul I suppose, but were were the Blue Tits, Great Tits and Long Tailed Tits that visit all the time? No Chaffinch or Green woodpecker. Could have been the cold, wet, windy weather. But they have to eat, don't they?
Bit disappointing….. but that's Nature.

The squirrel came of course and ate the bird food.

Didn't do it, but I've hardly seen any birds this winter so far. It has been reported that the mild weather has led to a glut of food in the countryside, so many simply haven't moved into more urban areas as usual.

Iv had all the tits, finches etc in flocks on my tree!! They have emptied the holders in four days.

The long-tailed tits were in our garden today. Well four of them anyway.

I had things to do and forgot all about the bird watch thing, however whilst our bird feeders are not quite empty, I can report that our berried bushes have been attacked over recent days quite effectively.

If it's perfection you're seeking, JL, then it was also probably a pigeon you saw - unless, of course, it was Walter himself.

We have a lot of chaffinch this year and a few goldfinch, as well as those species you mention.

My husband did this last year I believe but found he was bombarded with emails asking him to buy this or that, so decided not to do it this time. We do feed the birds and have blue tits, great tits, chaffinches, greenfinch, goldfinches and other varieties. We are fortunate that we don't have squirrels over here so nobody steals the food.

Four days? Ours can demolish a feeder in less than a day - and we have about half a dozen. It costs more to feed the birds than it does me!!!

Don't be too sure, MJ. Their tails may not be bushy but they are certainly long !

Yes we did the bird watch too, we saw sparrows, pigeons, a big fat blackbird, a thrush and a few blue tits. Not as many birds around this year it seems but I also heard on t.v. That they are staying in the countryside longer this year due to the mild weather.

I did Garden Birdwatch, as I do very year. I started my hour at 2.30 pm on Saturday. Soon after the sky went dark, the thunder started and then we had a hail storm. Needless to say, no bird was silly enough to emerge and visit my garden or bird table. I managed to do my count yesterday afternoon with the usual vast numbers of sparrows and surprisingly, six long tailed tits (we rarely see them here), plus two robins, a blue tit, a blackbird and my lovely great spotted woodpecker.

Well, would you believe it? This morning, around 9.30, just around the time i did my count yesterday, there were blue tits, and a pair of green woodpeckers in the garden.. It would seem we should do the count over a few days, not just an hour.. They say that it doesn't matter if you don't see any birds or not the "usual" birds, as they will be somewhere else. I wonder how much the weather affects birds garden visits? and does the RSPB know what weather there is in any one area?

K I didn't want to say but yes we actually saw a longtail climbing up to one of the feeders a few years ago. Panic!! We haven't seen him for a while but I know he's out there somewhere.

We didn't formally do the Watch, but we enjoy feeding the birds

Our usual visitors are sparrows, blackbirds, wood pigeons, doves, a robin and various tits and finches, and sometimes a wren

We had great excitement yesterday as two new birds arrived. We had to look them up in our 'bird book', and it turns out that they are jays
