Do I Need This Gizzmo?

Unread post by david63 »

I was watching the TV last night when up pops an advert for "Hive Active Heating". So being the curious soul that I am I have had a look at this.

Briefly for £199 you can have a central heating control system that is connected to your broadband router which you can then control from anywhere in the world by using an app on your mobile phone.

Now the question is - "why would you want to control your central heating when you are not in the house?"

I have a timer that switches the heating on/off at specific times and a thermostat that turns the heating on if the temperature drops below a pre-set level.

Am I missing something somewhere?

Just another money making gimmick David that will no doubt sell in it's thousands at a time when we are all looking to save on our energy costs. The difference is, some of us have more sense than money.

It'll be for those poor souls who do not do any forward plannng but need instead to respond ' after ' the event, in this instance a cold snap while they are away in some other part of the Country or even further afield.

Another gadget to go wrong and another wanting an ever more remote password.
I was taught to be cautious

Somehow I reckon that this is something which has one main purpose - to make profit for the manufacturers.

The only time I can see it being useful to save on the heating bill is if someone is caught in bad traffic. On the other hand, if you are on a train which is delayed, then you could amend the start time of the heating, and get recompense from the train company!

Seriously though - it's not for us.

Em :relaxed:

Probably it would be suitable for somebody like ourself (no we do not have one), but are aware of it, as we are with British gas for our supply of gas/electricity.

We cannot control our heating when out, the only control we have of our heating is the radiator thermostats, no room thermostats. Also no thermostat which turns the boiler on if the temperature drops below a certain level. Yes we can set the boiler to turn on an off at certain times, at whatever temperature we had set the boiler.

This device would give us much more control and flexibility, whilst out or away, such as if there was a sudden change in the temperature up or down, or a change in our plans whilst out, arriving home earlier or later than expected, we would be able to over ride the boiler on/off settings, and the temperature settings at any time, from wherever we happen to be.

Would it saves us money doubt it, but would certainly give us more flexibility and control of our heating whilst out or away. :)

We had a new boiler installed in December and had Hive control as part of the package. I agree that you can control everything via the weekly schedules. Not yet needed to use it much, but I am sure if we were away and weather took a turn for the worse I would use it to turn the heating up, change the schedule etc. My iPad or iPhone are always on the coffee table so if I need to turn the temp up I don't even have to get up off the settee...  - joking by the way.... :moresarcasm:
