Wheres my car?

Unread post by jacksparrow »

Have you seen on the news today about the sink hole that appeared in a front garden in Buckinghamshire?? They seem to be coming more common.

It does make you wonder, with all the building on mining land, whether any fracking will cause further problems like this…

At our previous house we had a hole appear in the drive. We had a brick block drive and my husband went to get in his van when his foot went down the hole pushing several bricks down. It was about 15 feet deep and 2 feet wide and I think they called it a bell hole. It was the responsibility of the National Coal Board who were round very quickly and fenced it off. They called in a local drilling company who carried out further investigations and then filled it in. It was frightening at first but was dealt with very efficiently in about 3 weeks.

If a car can go I would be extremely worried about my property.

I have friends that live 10 miles from me in an area of former mining pits. Recently they have been getting very strong tremors which are enough to knock pictures of the wall and move ornaments around. It is a standing joke that one day they will all end up in a big hole together. After seeing today's picture of 'the hole' and seeing the devastating effects that has been caused by the recent bad weather in so many parts of the country it could be quite frightening.

Reading the above post by rita17 it sounds as though this is something that can happen in mining areas , maybe we just don't hear much about it.

Never mind the car, you could easily lose a person in that sort of hole.

Horizon did a programme on TV last night about the sink holes in Florida and the death of Jeff Bush whose bedroom collapsed into a sink hole and he has never been found. Some areas have hundreds of sink holes but people still buy houses in the area - no way would we want to live there.

In the UK, wouldn't the house owners be able to claim against the company who did the survey when the property was purchased?

I know that the first thing we look at when we buy a property is the flooding situation, and then we also look at any mining activities.

Somerset is now off our future moving to wish list.

Possibly if they actually had a survey done and it was something that should have been known at the time.

Lucky it was just the central reservation and note the carriageway as someone one driving over it. Could have caused a nasty accident.

Yet another giant sink hole appears today in a quiet cul-de-sac in Hemel Hempstead, Herts. 35ft wide x 20ft deep, the third sink hole to open up in the last week in Britain.
