E cigarettes on ships
we have recently come back off a Thomson cruise on which e cigs were allowed in 2 venues on board ,as well as in your cabin
in light of the smoking ban on balconies etc, should other cruise lines become more accepting of e cigs and allow them to be used on board?
please do me a favour before responding and please research what an e cig is ,before assuming it the same as a normal cigarette, it is not

Personally I would not have a problem with anyone using e-cigs in designated areas (be that a balcony, public room or a "normal" smoking area).
Where I see the problems is firstly with policing it (was this an issue on Thomson?) and secondly with the vociferous anti smoking at all costs lobby who would insist on them being banned everywhere (again any problem on Thomson?)

I wouldn't see any problems with ecigs at all either on balconies or in public rooms, after all it is only water vapour which is being exhaled.
I'm not sure how I would feel about somebody 'lighting up' in the dining room although I acknowledge it is irrational to question it. I suppose it would equate to (knowing) somebody breathing over you.

Re: E cigarettes on ships
there were 2 internal venues where I could use me e cig, as well as designated deck areas and my cabin
the casino and the ajoining Delo bar
the first night on board I checked with the bar staff and got the go ahead to use my e cig, after that I carried on as normal, with no issue at all, several other people used their's as well
I must admit one or two were trying to be very discreet, almost in order not to attract attention but apart from that there were no issues
the only minor issue was one woman giving me sour looks and then harping on to her husband and then staring back, I was waiting for her to say something but the waitress came to serve us and as the watress had not said anything the woman's husband told het to give over.
great if you can lip read
so all in all a very civilsed response to e cigs and I didnt see anyone break the rules
, which helped in our choice to book again with thomson

I would have no problem with e cigs either. If someone is trying to give up then well done them. Being an ex-smoker of over
25 years, whose nickname was "fag ash lil" then I know how hard it is to give up.

I've actually seen people being asked to stop using e-cigs onboard (Cunard). However, I don't know what the current situation is.
One on occasion the staff hadn't noticed it - and it was being used in The Courtyard (an open air al fresco eating venue), but a passenger complained (quite loudly) and we overheard.

The vast majority of smokers know it's a revolting habit and the damage that results from indulging. Therefore give them every encouragement, let them use their e-ciggies whenever and wherever they are needed and don't discourage them from giving up.

I'm pleased there is to be no smoking on balconies mainly from a safety point of view. I'd be far happier with people using E cigarettes.

I know this sounds a bit 'girlie', but after seeing that red/orange glow from normal cigarettes for most of my life, it's interesting to see these e-cigs with pink, green or blue lights on the end of them!
I wonder - for women who smoke these new e-cigs - do they select ones to match their special evening outfits etc?
Now there's a money making thought - someone else has probably already thought of it, but it's fascinating. There could be patterned ones, plain coloured ones, and ones with sparkly bits for evening wear!
Taking it one step further - could/would women get their own sequins and sparkly bits and glue them on the e-cig? Would it be safe, would it work - could look quite snazzy though.

Only the hardened zealot could or would complain about e-ciggs. I have been in the company of people smoking or is it vaping these contraption which incidentally don't look anything like a cigarette. There is no smell and the little vapour there is dissipates in milli seconds. Of course there will be a body of opinion, no doubt financed by the tobacco giants, who will try to discredit them, but hey they stop people smoking, which is most beneficial to their health and wallet.
BTW
Good to have you back

Totally agree Ray
on board nobody seemed to mind people using them in the right places and nobody seemed to be abusing the rules
I have been happily using mine for about 8 months and it does work and keeps you off the real ones, I hav recently change brand to something even cheaper

I've never actually seen one of these e-cigs, so thank you for that information. It will save me giving the 'evil eye' to people I think are smoking where they shouldn't.Boris+ wrote:I know this sounds a bit 'girlie', but after seeing that red/orange glow from normal cigarettes for most of my life, it's interesting to see these e-cigs with pink, green or blue lights on the end of them!

Hi Emjay,
Well - first time I saw one, I was in a sort of lunchtime in the sun onboard, if you know what I mean. Someone else (don't know them - nothing to do with us) on a nearby table started making a bit of fuss and pointing. Then I looked quietly, and saw a chap smoking, but the end of his 'cigarette' was 'glowing' the most lovely shade of pale royal blue. It was the colour of the 'glowing' that took my attention.
Being a complete numpty, lazily enjoying the nosh - I couldn't work it out. Later on someone told me that it was an e-cig. However, that colour was just pretty.
