You shouldn't moan about cruise holidays

Unread post by barney »

My brother is just back from a very well deserved break in the Dominican Republic.
They loved it. The resort was everything they hoped and the service etc was excellent

But .... the journey there and back was a nightmare.

They arrived at Gatwick in good time to find that their plane was stranded in Jamaica with 'issues'. It was a Dreamliner.
Eventually left for their holiday on a different plane, nearly six hours late.

On the return journey ( a red-eye) they were again very delayed by five hours leaving, and then were diverted to Stanstead instead of Gatwick due to 'issues' with the plane (again a Dreamliner).

Of course, the car was at Gatwick so were bussed round to collect.
The Dartford bridge was shut and the other tunnel was being used causing massive tailbacks.

Long story short, they eventually walked in doors 10 hours after they should have been home. Ready to drop as you can imagine.

That's why I cruise, I told him.
A slow poodle down to Southampton with hours to spare and a warm welcome on arrival.
It has a lot going for it.

He'll be in need of a holiday after all that!

When I worked for a TA, we were told that, while in the Dom Rep, it was not advisable to leave the hotel complex. Does that still hold true?

That Dreamliner is turning out to be a bit of a waste of space.

We flew on the Dreamliner a few weeks ago and it was superb, spacious, quiet , fast and far more comfortable than many other planes
yes it has teething issues but it is a fine way to travel, when it runs properly

The Dreamliner certainly sounds superb, and let's face it any plane can have technical issues. The only times we've been delayed for technical stuff it's been on well tried workhorses like 737s and 747s, so no surprise if there are hiccups. No consolation to those affected though.
