Lance Armstrong

Anyone been following his interviews with Oprah ?

What's your thoughts ?

A genuinely regretful man ?

Or is the only thing he regrets is that he got caught?

Hi Dennis - not a leg to stand on. Didn't seem very sorry to me, apart from the fact that his son knows his Dad is a liar. He's not the only one of course, but it rather makes you feel that sport is tainted.

The only thing that Lance Armstrong regrets is getting caught. Let's hope that some of those he sued when they tried to tell the truth will now sue him.

He seems to be very sorry but only for himself. It must be pretty galling for all those who rode drug free and were cheated out of cycling glory because of Armstrong and others like him. I don't think he was the only one and suspect there were more who were also cheating. It's just that he was a prolific winner. I find it very difficult to have any sympathy for him. How many times did he say he had not cheated?
I was taught to be cautious

Hi both.

Yes I agree.

And what about all that money he's made, I don't see him giving any of that back. I know he says his future income has disappeared but in my eyes he doesn't deserve the money he's got already.

The saddest part to me is that neither he, or us, will ever know how good a cyclist he was.

Foxy, I think doping was rife but as you say no justification for it.

I read somewhere that pretty much all of the top 5 finishers of 5 consecutive TDF's in the 2000's had all subsequently failed drug tests.

So yes maybe you did have to dope to win it in those years but it doesn't make it right.

Hi DTM

Please don't tell Darknight I've said this ...but I only have to look into someone’s eyes to tell if they are lying or not.....he cheated then, and is lying in now.

And there was me thinking I had a gift.... clearly others can see right through him as well.

Regards

Keith

Agree with Foxy about all the clean riders who were cheated by Lance and his ilk (give them some of you dosh Lancey boy - show you're seriously sorry) - which is where I agree with Menace.

He said something about not deserving not being allowed to race again. IMO he will never get exactly what he deserves!!

What really annoys me is the fact that during all those years of lies, he sued (or threatened to) many people who suggested he took drugs.

He also himself committed perjury - or so it would appear.

Lance Armstrong's autobiographical book "It's Not About the Bike" was such an inspirational story of his fight against Testicular and Secondary Cancers and then going on to win the Tour de France, that I find I cannot bring myself to watch his interview with Oprah confessing that he took drugs to achieve this.

A truly sad day for cycling.

That's right 007.

He was a hero for many through both his cycling exploits and his battle with cancer.

I have seen a small part of his interview and to me he comes across as a man wanting people to forgive him but without him wanting to give an apology or admit he has done anything wrong. He said he wanted to race again and compete as he was "a competitive man" but he isn't. He is a man that wanted the prize but didn't want to work hard for it or win it the right way. I feel sorry for the people that should have won the prize and didn't due to his drug misuse.

J, There were a few "sorry", "regret" "shame" moments but it all felt a little like a politician who had been prepped by his people to say certain words in a certain way.

I prefer sorry in actions words are cheap and said just as a word and not an action, this man should now go quietly and leave the sport to recover.

It sounded to me as if others were doping too, and him doing it made a level playing field of sorts for him and a handful of others but that does not make it right. I don't think he should be allowed to compete again.

Jaczs, it is obvious he has a few very undesirable traits within his character. There is no doubt he was a bully and a liar, the problem is where do these stop.

Of the many sports out there it appears that in cycle racing drug taking is rife ... many athletes who have been caught have stated that they are all at it and if their only mistake was getting caught. I wonder how long before we hear more confessions from the 'winners'.

To be honest I have actually reached the stage whereby I do not believe they can police drug abuse and therefore why not just let it .. but separate the categories into the do's and don't's.

WAS rife Ken. The introduction of the blood passport some years ago means its now much less frequent.

Getting back to Armstrong, I saw someone make a good point the other day on the tele - after suing all those who said he doped, knowing damn well he had, he certainly showed a lot of ball. ;)

ADMIN!!!!!!

Shouldn't this thread be in the "Games" section?

Surely, if football is, then cycling should be too.

And DTM, be warned - any drivel about F1 should be in there too! :D

Just been reading of an "entrepenuer" who bought several 1000 DVDs telling how Lance made it to the top...made and bought before the truth outed.

Instead of selling them at £3 each, he's now thinking they'll only be good for recycling. :D
