Cummerbunds and black shirt studs,
Does anyone think that it is nothing short of good form to include a cummerbund if one is going to dress for dinner on a proper cruise? I prefer red with my white tropical jacket and black with the more regular one. Oh and black shirt studs with the black cummerbund but frill front with the red one. On such occasions desert wine followed by port and stilton?

Re: Cummerbunds and black shirt studs,
And here's me given to understand that wearing a red cummerbund identifies you as a circus ringmaster!.
Just take the easy solution of a navy blue suit and you can use the jacket and trousers on other evenings. Looks smarter than a penguin suit as well.

White jackets are the one the head waiters wear aren't they?

Re: Cummerbunds and black shirt studs,
I wear a black dinner suit, also have a white Tux jacket which I wear with the suit trousers. Have never worn a cummerbund with either, personally do not like them. I agree with Dave ring master does come to mind.
Neither have I worn black studs on my white formal shirts they have white buttons. My black formal shirts already have black buttons.
I think all my cruises have been proper cruises, otherwise they were mis sold to me.
I do have a selection of bow ties, and try to match them to what my wife is wearing at the time.

They are either the band leaders or the ice-cream salesmen.Dark Knight wrote:White jackets are the one the head waiters wear aren't they?
Cruise ships do not portray proper formal wear, they are just a pantomime imitation so you can wear what you like as far as I am concerned.

I always suspected that Cunard was just a Downton Abbey theme park!

Re: Cummerbunds and black shirt studs,
Thank goodness there are lines such as P&O who have their formal nights. I'm not really bothered what other people feel about the wearing of DJs, cummerbunds, black ties or whatever. If it is a formal night it gives me one of the now infrequent occasions to dress up and complement/compliment my lady and all the other ladies. There are plenty of other cruise lines which offer more relaxed dress codes and if that's what 'floats your boat..............' (no pun intended).
Away from a cruise I can be one of the scruffiest characters ever. I know how to do scruff. However I also have a nice selection of dress shirts, bow ties, black shirt studs, mother of pearl shirt studs, cufflinks, socks and formal shoes which come out for cruises and Ladies Nights and I enjoy sprucing up. I'm not really into cummerbunds but if people like them, why not?
And after dining the tie is undone!
Vive la difference.

Re: Cummerbunds and black shirt studs,
Hmmm - yes, I do like to see the gentlemen all nicely 'suited and booted' on a formal night, and the shirt studs etc and cufflinks and cumberbunds (sp?) are a
lovely addition to any outfit.
As far as undoing a bowtie once dinner is over - it can really look quite attractive, a bit 007-ish!

If one wanted to be ostentatious then one would have diamond studs in one's dress shirt

Clutch your pearls!! I believe that is for 'other' cruise lines!! No self respecting ten bob millionaire would be seen dead with studs in their ears, pins through their noses or ironmongery in their eyebrows. How very dare you!!!Andrea S wrote:Don't forget the ears. Will that be 1 stud or 2.

Re: Cummerbunds and black shirt studs,
I'm more than happy to be a 'cruise snob'
If dressing up makes you one then so be it but the reason I cruise is because I enjoy the formality of it ( the more formal the better as far as I'm concerned )
Fortunately there is something to suit everyone these days

Re: Cummerbunds and black shirt studs,
Having done the PandO "it's still the days of the Raj" cruise and the Thomson "it's the 21st century, not the 1920's" cruise
I can confidently sate that the dress code makes no difference what so ever to the atmosphere on the ship
Dressing up to impersonate your social betters, which is all formal night is, is very dated and shows PandO lack of originality, when compared to other lines, which is why they are mired in the past
mind you it is good business for Matalan and M&S . as it seems that is where most of the nylon DJ's come from

Re: Cummerbunds and black shirt studs,
Which is maybe why P&O are offering M&S vouchers as their latest booking incentive.
another desperate attempt to halt the inevitable drift towards informality
mind you these big modern ships can cater for all tastes and i have yet to hear of someone suffering a stroke or coronary because they saw someone dressed in evening casual on formal night.
Doing a Ventura fly cruise in May and not taking any formal gear.

Re: Cummerbunds and black shirt studs,
We will have to agree to disagree there DK - my interpretation of 'dressing up' has never been to impersonate my 'social betters' in fact I don't believe anyone is better or worse than anyone else and I would never judge a person on how they dress .. each to their own is my motto but I will be continuing to cruise with the lines who offer me the option !!!Dark Knight wrote:Having done the PandO "it's still the days of the Raj" cruise and the Thomson "it's the 21st century, not the 1920's" cruise
