Which Report

Unread post by gfwgfw »

Greetings dear gentle folk

Need a 'puter upgrade

Seems to me a Tablet should be the obvious purchase route

But it is a minefield of chooses

Could some kind shipmate guide me in the right direction . . . bearing in mind that my "peepers" are no longer A! OK

Budget circa £300

We have an ipad Graham but if I'm honest I much prefer my laptop, take the ipad on holiday but 9 times out of 10 will use the ships computers, I'm sure they have many advantages so it is probably just me that doesn't like change

Well gfwgfw my OH Popeye is very much into his computers and bought a tablet which he thought would the best thing ever.

However he has found he prefers his laptop to the tablet, which he expected to use on holiday but actually does not.
The tablet is fine for certain things, but not all he wants to do.

DQ - you are not on your own as regards change. I decided against a tablet, cant use the touch-screen so well, being a trained typist I just have
to have a keyboard.

There are Android tablets that are far cheaper and more flexible than iPads.

I think I'd be happier to stick with a laptop and not change to a tablet. When the time comes, I'll get another laptop any day of the week - it's nothing to do with not wanting change, I'm perfectly happy with using a laptop, and why change the type of product I use (as and when the need arises) when I am perfectly happy with the concept of the product I currently have?

Change for changes sake - not on this topic.

Sir

IMHO, it depends very much on what you want to use the technology for.

I do a spot of photo and video editing, a bit of number crunching and a few documents, so I need a computer.

If all you want to do, though, is send emails, surf the web and read ebooks, then I'd go for a tablet. The Lady C and I think our Hudls are great.

I am also like Gill, since getting my IPad it is also glued to my finger.

I have a desktop computer and the IPad is synced to it, but I rarely use the desktop these days, maybe a little bit of photo editing. However as I can download my photos straight from the camera to the IPad, I can edit them on there and then transfer them to my Flik'r account, Facebook, forums or wherever I want to send them.

I use the IPad for searching the net, sending and receiving EMails, watching TV, live and the IPlayer, I also have an app which enables me to watch TV around the world. I can store and read books, listen to music, even sync it to music I have stored on my desktop, watch videos and films, much better sound when I listen via my earphones. in fact most things I could do on the Desktop I can do on the IPad. All my postings on this forum are done on the IPad, great for taking on holiday.

Lorraine has a Laptop and again since she got her Kindle fire tablet, she hardly uses the laptop, she can do all she wants to on her kindle and her IPhone.

Had my iPad for three years now and it comes around the house with me !. Don't think I've ever used anything computer'ish' as much. I've never liked laptops so my husband uses that and his iPad and I use my iPad all the time with just the occasional glance at my old desktop.

I think that the key statement by the OP is that his eyesight is not too good and whilst I agree that an ipad can be very useful and convenient then he will probably have to resort to an ipad mini within his budget which has a small(ish) screen - the same goes for a tablet (small screen).

There is also the problem of learning a new technology with a tablet/ipad - and transferring any data over which can, depending on what it is, be somewhat difficult.

Bearing the above in mind my suggestion would be for one of the sub £300 touchscreen laptops that are on the market.

iPad 2's are under £300, depends if people want all singing all dancing but they are more than adequate for most. I don't like the iPad mini after using husbands as I prefer the bigger screen.

Hi Graham

Providing you don't want to run high end games on the PC then there are a couple of laptops here that are just a little over your budget but should fit the bill. I would go for the second one as it has a better Intel processor. But either should do. You can always adjust the text/font size to suit your peepers. If it's a tablet your are definitely after look at the iPad 2 on the PC World home page link below which is within your budget

I have an iPad Graham and wouldn't be without it. They are so convenient.

I also don't have the best peepers in the world, but with the reading glasses on I have no problems using it. They take a bit of getting use to but you soon pick it up. At the end of the day it come down to personal choice.

My advice would be to pop along to your nearest PC World store, have a look at the iPad 2 and the laptop/s and see which you feel best suits your needs.

Hey gang

Thanks for your kind posts, I am swayed towards the tablet route, but which one ?

Intrigued by a fellow passenger on my bus, he had a Tablet which looked good, sadly he was not prepared to chat about his toy

I know I keep banging on about the Hudl, Graham, but it's got one of the best screen resolutions, especially at the budget end. If eyesight is an issue for you, you need one that has a crisp display.

I have a problem with wifi dropping out on the Hudl - unless a few feet from the router, no connection.

Looking online, it's a known problem.

I had the same problem at my mum's but, because her laptop kept losing its connection, I put it down to a fault with her router.

We've had no trouble with either of our Hudls anywhere else.

For those who have the IPad, I recommend the latest 7.1 up date, the screen display seems that much clearer, also like the new keypad.

Morning silver surfers

After much consideration and soul searching had help from my fellow shipmates

I have purchased the Apple ipad Air

Now waiting for Virgin to install a router that according to their web site is free to my particular account

But it is not free as my existing box has to be changed to the all singing all dancing Tivo box

This carry's and hefty installation charge plus an increase in my monthly payment

Probably buy a router from a local shop which will be about the same price as quoted by Virgin

However, I have registered a complaint to Virgin regarding their webpage implying the router is advertised as free to existing customers

Do have a good day folks

Not sure why you need a new router as ipads connect to any router.

Graham.

David is right. Providing your existing router has a wireless option, which most have, then it will work fine with your new iPad. It sounds like Virgin are just out to lighten your bank account.

Set up is easy Graham, it pretty much does it itself. But if you need any help setting it up let me know. I have the iPad retina display thingy version which can't be that much different from the air, settings wise.

Probably something to do with Dennis The Menace trying to hack in for new ideas for another book :D
