Tony Benn

Unread post by david63 »

Tony Benn has died at the age of 88.

As with any politician you will never agree with everything that they say or do he is probably one of the last of an era where they were not afraid to stand up for what they believed in.

I rather liked him, he was MP for Chesterfield for a number of years.

He certainly did stand up for what he believed in, as you say one of the last of an era.

He was our MP for many years. I did not follow him with his political views, but have to say that he worked tirelessly for his Constituents.

My one and only occasion that I needed to 'put my two penneth' in' I rang Labour Headquarters in our Town and asked to leave a message for him - the voice said 'Tony speaking'!!! This was about lunchtime and he told me that he had been in 'The House' until the early hours discussing the subject I had rung about. We spoke for a long while but, in the end, still had to beg to differ.

Nevertheless, always approachable.

RIP

Tony Benn was, during my youth, MP for Hengrove, Bristol, my place of birth. My Father was a died in the wool Conservative, but he had great respect for Mr Benn and was always happy to listen to his views. He felt he never deviated from his strong convictions and was therefore to be admired.

He had a long life, well lived.

We don't have to agree with him to admire him. Sadly the current batch and not of the same calibre

A rare breed, Tony Benn

A politician of conviction irrespective of the 'party line'. I liked him.

Our last MP Ann Widdicombe was of the same mould, if of a totally different stand point.

I wouldn't know our existing one if she stood up in my soup. Career girl who sways with the breeze to please the party.

Certainly not a "you scratch my back l'll scratch yours" kind of MP....more like "l'll say it as l see it and be dammed" kind of MP.

I would much rather listen to someone spouting their own political view points than listen to someone spouting the view point of others.
