Six hours????

Unread post by suespud »

If the birth of her second child goes well, my daughter could be home only six hours after giving birth.!!! It's astounds me.
Things have changed so much, not always for the better either.
Is it all down to do with costs??
The midwife doesn't call every day after the birth either now, like they used to, for up to ten days.
Granted they are at the end of the phone, if the new mother needs them and they will come out, if there is a real problem.
In the days of so many single parents and broken families, some young mums don't get the support they need.
I used to work with young mothers, teaching them parenting skills. It's a sad and not so good sign of the times. :(

Six hours is plenty of time. When I gave birth to my youngest, back in Essex, I was in the salon having my spray tan and vajazzle 2 hours later :D

I think cost is partly responsible, but also the demand is also there. Young mums want to get back home and providing there are no medical contraindications and there is some support at home, there is PROBABLY no real reason for them not to. I do feel mums should have more visits from the midwife once at home however.

Times have changed, whether we like it or not and people always think they know best these days and therefore demand what they want, rather than take advice from professionals.

Six hours sounds like luxury to me - half an hour off work then back to the loom I says :sarcasm:

I have a friend who was sent home after 6 hours - but this is before the baby has really fed etc. The baby ended up back in hospital a few weeks later 'failing to thrive'.

If they'd stayed in a day or so, this would have been picked up earlier and saved a fortune in money and in worry

Personally I think they're taking liberties stopping work. Put a stick in your mouth in case you just might wince a little and crack on :moresarcasm:

Our daughter had her third baby at home, her request.

It turned out to be a breach birth, no gas and air (machine broke), no tablets and no medication. She did have a midwife there, also Lorraine.

I agree sue six hours is not long enough, it puts too much pressure on the mother at a time when she should have some sort of rest, and just relax with her new baby.

Our daughter was discharged from hospital 6 hours after giving birth to her first baby , but after just 1 day had to,go back in again as the baby had jaundice. They were then in hospital for 3 days anyway so my thinking is that not rushing things in the first place would probably pick up any problems and they could be quickly treated. I'm sure it is all down to cost as the maternity hospital was packed and lack of staff was very obvious. A mum in labour is left by themselves frequently which is very worrying for them and did not happen 30 years ago when I was having my babies. Yes things change but in this case not for the better in my opinion.
