He is giving his entire salary to Parisian children's Charities

How nice is that

I'm always amazed how nobody gives it another thought about footballers earning unbelievably high salaries per week and yet there is much gum sucking when we hear of any other professionals in public and private sector jobs earning anything like that per year.

Dear OBF

Many years since I felt so privileged to be a semi-pro footballer playing for my home town team, The Magpies

If memory serves me right we were paid a weekly retainer of £6.10 shillings per week - rain or shine

£9 a game + £9 a win . . . . all tax free

But my big pay-off for me was meeting this extremely good looking young lady, with wonderful jet black hair and haunting brown eyes who shyly asked for my autograph

Who has been my bed mate for 57 years

Like David Beckham I done exceedingly well out of the fantastic game of football

Whatever lies behind this gesture (if anything) he's making other lives a little bit richer so on that score he hits the net every time for me.

Only wish it was an English net and not a French one as charity begins at home.

I have nothing against the lad. Sure, he displayed some petulism when playing for England - but that's par for the course these days.

He's made the most of his lot.... a true entrepreneur IMO.

I would agee that Mr Beckham has done exceedingly well from the game of football, but he has never been my favourite player, even although I have met him.

Over rated and over valued in my opinion.

He is very good at promoting himself and has done well.
However I can think of hundreds of people, famous and not so famous, who have raised millions of pounds for charities in this country who don't get recognition. I believe the media are fascinated with him and his wife and he has been clever enough to manipulate them to his own advantage, probably as a consequence of having very good PR consultants to hand.
It's a nice gesture but why the need to publicise it?

Nice gesture .. would have been nicer if he did similar in the UK ... I get the feeling that there probably is tax or publicity benefits to this .. after all his wife did a Spice Girls tour to avoid paying millions in taxes. It also somewhat annoys me that the mega rich make big deals about their charitable work, especially when their contribution will be seen to have loads of zeroes at the end but, £-for-£ compared to the average person, their contribution, in a holistic sense, is usually a pittance out of their pockets (albeit still welcome by the charities).

I agree with you there, graham, I listened to him being interviewed a while back and I really like the fellow ... to me he is the epitome of what a role model should be, fully earned through his own hard work and dedication in his chosen field.

Fiar play to the chap. Love him or hate him, the boy's done good. Look back to some of the interviews he gave when he first broke onto the scene - he could hardly string two words together (and they were pretty much incomprehensible). He has worked hard on his image and PR skills - and was a supremely talented player to boot. He's just a bit too keen on self-promotion these days for my likiing.
