Major investment in Hull

Unread post by Dark Knight »

It has been announced today that Hull is to benefit from the creation of up to 1000 new jobs in the off shore, wind farm industry, which is part of a major investment by Siemens
A much needed boost to the upcoming city of culture ,also a great reflection on the UK as a whole ,as a centre of engineering excellence
It is good too see investment outside of the capital for a change

Good news for the youngsters, at last

That programme London V the Rest was very interesting in how it shows that money naturally follows money. Skills follow skills and people follow people.

A great example was the Elephant & Castle area of SE London.
When I was a youngster, to say it was a total dump would have been complimentary.
Now, it's the home of the Techies and is a very vibrant area.

London and the South East will always be the dominant financial area of the country but nice to see it spread around.

Even if it is wasted on worthless green energy projects, and all the profits head back to Germany.

I dont think the people who gain employment from this will be sending every penny back to Germany?
it will help stimulate the local economy and put money back into the region
your rather jingoistic comments are typical of the insular "little Englander"

Any investment in the UK has to be a good sign

As was demonstrated last week with the announcement from Hitachi about moving their rail operation to the UK - again in the northlands

There have been many instances in the past where so-called expansion meant in reality short-term or part-time jobs - although many workers were lead to believe that the positions they had newly gained could be relied on to lead to permanent and full-time positions.

Where employees actually believed that they could rely on their new positions they then made unwise financial decisions (in some cases they 'celebrated' their 'good fortune' by running up credit), and when the new employers trimmed back on employee numbers (albeit slowly and quietly) and on hours worked per employee many people were left in dire straights.

Whilst I have never been in such a situation, I know of people who have been in horrid situations, and I most sincerely hope that people starting new jobs will not be mislead and will also not be mistreated. I also hope that where 'things go ok' for folk, they don't run up huge credit bills and live to regret it. It would be great if this 'good news' really was good news for everyone in the Hull and surrounding area.

Em

Seriously, though, I think this is great news for the region and that the jobs created will be permanent and not, as Em rightly fears, quietly made temporary

Hi Alan,

I really hope very strongly that this is going to be good news - and the 'hub' of the intended or newly announced activity may well offer some new and permanent positions. However (and sorry if I didn't explain it very well) there are quite a few big employers in the UK who will get planning permission to build new 'outlets' on the basis that there will be employment for x number of people - then the press get hold of it and many believe they are going to have good and permanent full time positions.

I wish everyone in the area named today a wonderful and content future with these new changes - and nobody would be happier than me to see it all go really well for everyone there.

All the best 'up north' - all the very, very best.

Em

When I saw the heading "Major investment in Hull" I assumed they must be knocking it down. Apparently not then. :sarcasm:

I on the other hand applauded the investment plus the recognition that there is a lot of wind, especially recently, in the Hull area ;)

On a more serious note the area to be developed really was the pits if the BBC News coverage is to be believed ... and the size of those things will surely set up a hummmmmmmm for miles around.
