2014 Grand National

Well its only 7 days till the 2014 Aintree Grand National so its time to start thinking about getting those pins out.

I will, later this week (Thursday) put up a link of declared runners so you can make your selections. By this time, most, if not all bookies will be going nrnb should you want to help them out with their cash flow.

As some of you will already know l have already advised a specultive punt on a horse called "Cape tribulation", unfortunately the horse sustained a leg injury and won't be making the line up....another antipost bet bites the dust.

There is no doubt the Grand National isn't the race it was but nethertheless is still a test of horse and jockey.

With the fences being less formidable than years past one should be looking for horses with a touch of class about them, well handicaped and have proven stamina.
Not wishing to nail my colours to the mast at this stage but a horse that fits all the above criteria is one that goes by the name of "Burton Port" A top class novice in his day (although hasn’t reproduced that kind of form for over two years) has to have a good chance especialy so having droped to a very nice handicap mark so if you are looking for a horse that "should" give you a good run for your money then you could do a lot worse than putting your £1ew on Burton Port. 25/1 most firms.

Can't remember who but l do recall one of our furom members selected last years winner.....perhaps she could give us this years winner?

It can work but only if I would part with my money . I have had 50p e w on Ocean Tempest and it is a grey. Yay 20-1 winner.

Hmmm was it me that got last years winner Keefy pure luck, as you know I don't know the first thing about the gee gee's but that one was a very nice little earner !!

Pick a nice name and it has just as much chance as winning. I always think in the Grand National if the 'bad' ones pull down the 'good' ones all those in the middle could be a winner.

I liked the sound of yours too, just go with your gut instinct, I did last year, I can't remember the name although it had Aurora in it somewhere, I put £20 to win on it and got several £100's back

ps: isn't it funny how we forget things (or is it we just remember what we want to ) I just noticed the GN thread from last year and taking a look it was my OH who had the winner, strange that because I remember spending his winnings well justified though as I had suggested it !!!

DQ, That is what relationships are about, sharing.

On names, our newest arrival is called Jack. Yesterday 3 horses were running with Jack in the name. As the OH was babysitting for a bit of fun he put a £5.00 round robin on these horses. 1 won, 1came 3rd and the other one came nowhere. Hearing the 8 year old Granddaughter getting excited as each race finished was hilarious.

In that case l shall give your selections much closer inspection.

Last years Grand National was one that l shall remember for quite a long time because when l saw Auroras Encore cantering to the final fence l should have been on it (not literally of cource) as it was only twelve months previously that l had backed it to win the Welsh Grand National. I think it went off as second favourite?

Unfortunately the horse hadn't shown a lot of form the previous year so decided to look else where. Although starting at odds of 66/1 the horse had contested some high class races befor its form taied off. However l was really chuffed for the trainer as she is one of the best at traing staying chasers.

I am now even more chuffed knowing that you backed it.....and would be even more so if you would be so kind as to donate a small amount of your winnings to the onelife cruise fund

Btw....l just want you to know that you're my bestestfriendforever.....but please don't tell the others l've said that

I always go by the name too.

However, I haven't bet on the National since 1981..... I quit when I was ahead, as my was bet on Aldaniti. My mother in law also knew when to stop. Her last bet on the National was 1967, when she had money on Foinavon !

However, if there's a sweepstake at the office I will enter

Not really Andrea I only have a flutter on something like the National, we do go to the races 3 or 4 times a year and I always bet with a friend we put £xx on each race and always to win, we probably lose more than we win but mostly we seem to break even so will have had a good day out and it hasn't cost much but I always go prepared to lose then I'm not disappointed

It is only fun but the difference with any winnings is shoes from Primark against your Jimmy Choo's.

Ha Ha wish I owned some Jimmy Choo's but I've never been able to find any at a price I'm willing to pay I did look at an American site for ages and the prices were really good but I was always a bit wary of buying shoes online, having said that I buy Miss KG shoes online but only because if they are not right we have a store in Meadowhall so easy to return.

I do happen to own a couple of pairs of Gina shoes which are gorgeous and I paid nothing like the silly prices demanded for them now
