Good morning punters,

It was with perticular intrest that l find a horse that l have fancied for quite a long time has made the cut and all things well will make the line up for the 40 runner race.

"Vesper Bell" won't figure as many pundits idea of the likely winner, especilly when you consider its recent form. Having already had a taste of the Aintree fences (fell first) gives another reason why most will dissmis the chances of this horse. I however am willing to take a chance that "Vesper Bell" will get his jumping together especially so now that the fences are less formidable than they once were, however it still remains a big "lf". Putting all this aside the horse has contested some high profile races, indeed going off fav for several of them so in my book this horse is no forlorn hope, espesialy when you consider who trains the horse.

So my £25 will be split between this horse and my other selection "Burton Port" with the bigger percentage of the stake going on the winner of the race "Vesper Bell"

Btw.....the Aintree meeting starts Thursday so don't forget to tune in.

You're starting to sound a little distressed about dear departed "Rummy" So here are a few facts that might help you come to terms with losing this racing legend.


Red Rum began his association with Aintree on April 7th 1967 - his debut race in the Thursby Plate where he finished in a dead heat with 'Curlicue'. Red Rum, a local lad at heart, trained on Southport sands, first won the race in 1973 coming from behind to beat Australian horse Crisp with whom he had been joint favourite. 

He followed this in 1974 with his second Grand National win leading the field for the final stages, even though he was as third favourite at 11-1.

He became the first horse since 'Reynoldstown' in the 1930's to win successive Grand Nationals. 

He raced again in 1975 and 1976.

In 1975 as 7-2 favourite he was beaten into second place by the twice Gold cup winner 'L'Escargot'. 

In 1976 Red rum was 10-1 second favourite but this time it was Rag Trade who ended the dream of triple wins, Red Rum again coming second.

At 12 years old in 1977 Red Rum was again entered in the National. His trainer, Ginger McCain, prepared him especially for the race planning the whole season to give him the best opportunity of being in perfect form for the race. Soon after Becher's, Red Rum took the lead and won the race to tumultuous cheering.

After his retirement Red Rum returned to Aintree many times to lead the parade of horses before the race.

He died on October 18th 1995 at the age of 30

The information you have just supplied to DTM has brought back very fond memories.

As my Avatar shows - one Afghan Hound - we had 6 in total.

We were walking on the sands near Southport one day when a Horse and Rider approached us. The Rider asked my Hubby if he would let our Affies off the leads, to pace the Horse!!!!!!

An innocent request I suppose, but we valued and loved our Affies far too much - we would never have seen them again as they were never off their leads - sight hounds and speed - it didn't bear thinking about They used to get their free exercise at the Greyhound track. Sorry to go slightly off topic

Sorry keefy, you must be mistaken - I've been placing an each way bet on red rum with my 'honest as the day is long' neighbourhood bookie for donkey's years.

Unless the horse had a propeller attatched to its backside l doubt very much whether it could have kept up with your Afghans.......espesially over the first two hundred metres

Sue fancies Shacalacaboomboom in the National and has put £10 on it to win.....oh dear! I think that is our first ever flutter on horses, although she loves all horses and Ch4 racing when she gets chance to watch it.
