Just had an e-mail from P&O which explains their new policy. It sounds very fair, to everyone, to me. Here's the releavnt bit

Following feedback from our passengers and the results of recent customer research, smoking will no longer be permitted on cabin balconies. Smoking is currently not permitted in cabins or public areas but the policy will continue to permit smoking in designated areas of the open deck.

With regards to electronic cigarettes which do not emit smoke, these are not permitted in public areas but they can be used in cabins, balconies and designated areas of the open deck.

So - bet they sell e-cigs on board soon :)
That looks like the obvious solution. Get your nicotine hit with a e-ciggie and you can puff away in your cabin and on the balcony without donating some of that nicotine and carcinogens to nearby people.

I wonder if there is some reluctance to use a e-cig because it is not considered manly? That of couse does not apply if you are in private.

I read elsewhere that the reason why e-cigs are only allowed in designated smoking areas is other passengers thinking they were real ciggies and causing a ruckus. The problems the crew have in smoothing out the ruffled feathers was just to much hassle.

Are there any advantages with smoking a real ciggie versus the e version?

always an interesting discussion, apart from two individuals who border on anti smoking facism
luckily they have no influence on anything and more grown up attitudes have prevailed within Carnival

JD suffers from Asthma which is exacerbated by smoke, but she says that the smell of BO in pubs is far, far worse that the smell of smoke

As an aside, my SIL and I went into The Forresters in Bristol a while back - it looks very nice from outside, like a Tudor building. Two steps inside the doorway, we were assailed by the stench of a filthy urinal. We made a very swift exit.

While I wouldn't go as far as to calling a stroll around the Promenade deck "pathetic", I do agree with the thrust of Mo's statement. We like to do a couple of circuits at least, every day and frequently have to breathe in second-hand smoke. I realy do not think it is too much to ask for a smoke-free Promenade deck andfor smoking to be confined to the highest outdoor point at the back of the ship.

The highest point at the back of the ship (Celebrity Cruises) is exactly where I am allowed to smoke my cigar - In the open. 8-)

As is the overpowering perfume/aftershave applied to mask such odours.

I will also add the smell of stale booze the morning after, please don't breathe that over me in a lift, nauseating.

If its any comfort to those having to run the gauntlet of smokers on the promenade deck, you are far less exposed to carcinogens than walking along your local high street, bit perhaps you have had motor vehicles banned

It's not carcinogens that are the problem, it's the acrid pungent stench.

But as I said earlier, most driving is essential. Burning tobacco isn't

compared to the vast amount of filth that comes out of a funnel, there will never be enough smokers on board to equal a tiny percentage of the damage that does, funny its never mentioned
and cruising isn't necessary, it is a luxury

Now there's another issue, all these naughty, nasty greenhouse gases that these nasty, horrible machines are spewing out to damage our atmosphere.

Funny how they are all heavier than air, yet exempt the laws of gravity to get all the way up to the ozone layer.....

smoking wont kill the entire planet, but destroying the ozone layer will
funny how people gloss over the damage cruise ships do to the sea, and the amount of dangerous toxins they pump out

heaven forbid cruisers take responsibility for their part in killing the oceans

But their emissions help to offset global warming. Best not to go there. All I want is a clear prom deck and a balcony with clean air.

I've had nearly 60 years of fug-filled cinemas and public spaces. All I ask is that during the last few years are left to me I can fill my lungs with clean air. :)

What could be the reason, if it isn't from customer feedback, why P&O have taken the decision to ban smoking on balconies ?

Have just received email from Cunard which says the same rules will also apply with them from next April.

I am all for it.
