Oh, thanks for that John. Fortunately I don't believe I have ever encountered anyone who spoke like that, except possibly in jest.
I thought you were a cruiser lol I've heard quite a few on board :)

Let's get this right then folks ..... this business of 'one' - a clear explanation:

Somebody asked which one 'one' was (or words to that effect - haven't got the hang of this quote thing yet, and it's been a hectic day).

I've worked it out so:

Seven dwarves were in the bath, 'one' was feeling 'grumpy'. Grumpy got out, QED 'one' was one of the remaining six. Ok?

Em :D

Yes John, I am a cruiser, but I repeat, fortunately I have not encountered anyone who spoke like that. Princess Ann was famous for using that form of speech, but I have never met the lady (!) and I do not believe that even she speaks like it any more. You seem to have been unfortunate.

Ok - going for the numpty award here - I sometimes use 'one' (otherwise known as one sometimes uses one).

Sorry. I suppose I use it when I wish to indicate that I am party to whatever it is being discussed, but don't wish to take the blame for it. The only other excuse one has, is that one believes that there is no 'I' in team, and one believes in teamwork.

Em :)

That just about covers the Isle of Wight - what about the rest of the world ?

I agree about the chavvy names thing, though.

My really big hate is people who drive in the middle lane on the motorway at 50 miles an hour

They seem oblivious to all around them and can go on for mile after mile, with others undertaking them.
And still the penny doesn't drop

OOH! and folk who park on the pavement. That also gets my back up. Why would anyone think that's ok ??????????

Barney, what you need to do is move to a proper place like the Isle of Wight. We don't tolerate motorways over here.

It's de rigeur in Naples, Barney ! In the UK people seem to think it is fine to park anywhere so long as they leave their hazard light flashing ! :?

Apart from the fact that many drivers seem to think they are exempt the speed limit, it doesn't matter how fast they are going - the middle and outer lanes are for overtaking ONLY. Once you've finished the manoeuvre (sic?), move back into the inside lane.

Another variation on speaking in the third person is the speaker calling himself by his own name.

For example Chesterfield John said

'Chesterfield John felt terrible when his post had to be edited'

I really hate the way some of the youngsters speak now, the way they say 'like' every other word, as in ' I went to the shop and , like , it was raining so I like put up my brolly and , like , it kept me dry ! and when they use 'of' instead of HAVE, as in ' I should of eaten that ' no you shouldn't, you should HAVE given it to me ! Makes me sound ancient I know but don't they teach them grammar at school any more ?

Agreed. Grammar seems to be low down on the curriculum. Splitting the infinitive is a burgeoning trend among BBC reporters. To Boldly Go was all very well in space, but its common use is very annoying, IMO. .

I, for one, certainly do, OBF. I noticed a drop in the standard of spelling in children born from 1960 onwards. I would hasten to add that not everyone from that time on has a poor grasp of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
