We buy each other cards for birthdays and anniversaries. For birthdays and anniversaries we used to go out for a meal at a nice hotel and have an overnight stay. Since retiring we have a mini break somewhere.

My family have always been very big on sending cards. My husbands family the opposite saying they were a waste of money, commercial blackmail etc. The very first Mother's Day card my MIL had was sent by me. When we were first married my husband knew he'd be in trouble if I didn't get a card for every special occasion, but as I've become older (wiser perhaps) I've come around to a different way of thinking. We no longer send cards to each other at Christmas or anniversaries. We do go out for a meal but it isn't essential.
Perhaps this year he'll let me into the house again like Stephen.
