It's obvious .. someone wanted to build a stage coach park and he said 'in this area? over my dead body'

Well, news just in - Leicester Car parks would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused whilst running a skeleton service.

I understand they are looking for other bodies buried in the same place.

It would then be a multi-storied car park. (twirls bow tie)

More breaking news ... Richard III has been declared as the Hide and seek champion for 1485.

Apparently he got the hump because he thought nobody was looking for him.

I find it fascinating when new evidence is uncovered for what was historical conjecture.

Anyone who has found this interesting and would like to read more about Richard III, there's a brilliant book called "The Daughter of Time" by Josephine Tey which is written as a detective mystery, and there's also a wonderful historical novel for those who like that sort of thing, called "We Speak No Treason" by Rosemary Hawley Jarman.

I've read both of those, and would also recommend them,

I'm a bit of a Ricardian on the quiet

There's a debate now about where he will be re-buried, they were talking about it yesterday on my local news (I live in West Yorkshire). So he is Richard III of York, but Leicester say, we want him buried here, but his wife and daughter were in York, and since he was known as Richard of York, I think he ought to be buried in York Minster. What do you think ? Just seen on the lunchtime local news from the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds a hideous axe thing which they presented in their belief it was the sort of weapon which killed him by a blow to the back of the head. Ouch ...

Being a southerner, I'd prefer Westminster Abbey, far easier to visit the grave.

But although he was from the House of York, I tend to support Leicester, as he's been lying there for 500 plus years

Richard must be thinking (if the dead do that) that after 500 plus years at rest another Battle has broke out to get him, when is it all going to end, and let me rest .

Why not pop him out in Bosworth Field along with an appropriate memorial ?

Well, the way I see it is - he died in battle so was laid to rest in the locality in the nearest consecrated ground, but had he been at home in York, and died, he wouldn't have be buried anywhere else - would he ..... living darn sarf and having to travel to Yorkshire if that was his resting place is not a good enough reason to bury him in Westminster Abbey  ;)

Hi Jo,

Not sure who makes the final decision - but the law says it should be the nearest church, qed Leicester Cathedral. As it appears that a huge part of the effort in finding the late King has been instigated by Leicester Uni, supported by Leicester Uni and undertaken by Leicester Uni - maybe it is only right and fair that the reinterrment should be in Leicester Cathedral.

It could bring (hopefully) visitors to Leicester - and that would be lovely.

I'm sure it would be lovely if it brought visitors to Leicester but I can't see it somehow, oversea visitors flock to places like London, York, Stratford Upon Avon even little old Derbyshire ( for Chatsworth which I believe is one of the most visited places in the country ) no disrespect to Leicester or any members that live there as I'm sure there is much to offer but would Richard III being buried there bring an enormous increase to the amout of people who would visit.

Hi Jo,

You have a good point there - I suppose we will all find out eventually.

Problem is, there's not much else to attract the casual visitor to Leicester is there?

By heck I sound dim, but Qbman I don't really know. What I do know however is that I am hoping to go there later this year - I'll start a new thread about this maybe.

Huh! As a Leicester lass I'd like to protect my territory and its historical culture by saying there IS alot that Leicester has to offer visitors from around the country and world in fact!
To list but a few we have:-
The National Space Centre (prob top of the list!)
The Golden Mile - or Little India as many call it - lots of Asian culture along a particular road in the city, namely Melton Road - people arrive from many different parts of the country regularly and particularly at Diwali time - in fact they come from worldwide to just see the Golden Mile.
And not forgetting Showaddywaddy!!! They are from Leicester! Lol :) :) :)

In fact talking of the Space Centre Leicester is definitely the place to inter Richard III - they could send his ashes up on a rocket! It'd make a good "orbit-uary" :)
